The Columbus Blue Jackets were red hot entering Thursday’s game with the Washington Capitals. Seven wins in a row, when it had previously looked like they’d be in the Connor McDavid sweepstakes.

But their winning streak has come to an end.

The Washington Capitals defeated the Blue Jackets in overtime by a final score of 5-4 in what was a back-and-forth contest. Columbus had the lead late in the third period, until Troy Brouwer had the puck deflect in off his skate, tying the game with three minutes remaining. The goal stood and Eric Fehr scored the winner in overtime for the Capitals.

“I have my thoughts, but I don’t want to comment on it,” Blue Jackets goalie Sergei Bobrovsky said of the Brouwer goal, as per Aaron Portzline of the Columbus Dispatch.

From the NHL’s Situation Room blog:

At 17:00 of the third period in the Washington Capitals/Columbus Blue Jackets game, video review supported the referee’s call on the ice that the puck deflected off Troy Brouwer’s skate and into the Columbus net in a legal fashion. According to Rule 49.2 “A puck that deflects into the net off an attacking player’s skate who does not use a distinct kicking motion is a legitimate goal.” Good goal Washington.
