One streak ended. Another endured.

The Arizona Coyotes finally snapped a losing streak on home ice that had run nine consecutive games, while the Edmonton Oilers, one day after firing Dallas Eakins, have now lost five in a row, and 16 of their last 17, and this game ended in crushing fashion, too.

One of these teams had to win.

The Coyotes, on a goal from Oliver Ekman-Larsson, defeated the Oilers by a final score of 2-1. Ekman-Larsson buried the winner on a slap shot with 0.3 seconds remaining in the overtime. No record-breaking 21-round shootout to solve this one.

Todd Nelson, who will transition into the interim head coaching position in Edmonton, was behind the bench alongside the club’s general manager Craig MacTavish, who had “blood” all over his hands with the firing of Eakins.

“We put in a decent effort at times, but this is still a work in progress... We’re ready to go to work for Todd,” said Oilers’ captain Andrew Ference, as per the club’s Twitter account.
