Canucks GM Jim Benning continued to tinker with his club’s organizational depth on Tuesday, acquiring Andrey Pedan from the Islanders in exchange for Alex Mallet and third-round pick in 2016.

Pedan, 21, was the Isles’ third-round pick (63rd overall) at the 2011 NHL Entry Draft and had three points in six games with AHL Bridgeport this season.

Mallet, 22, was Vancouver’s second-round pick (57th overall) at the 2012 NHL Entry Draft and had 11 points in 14 games with ECHL Kalamazoo this season.

Pedan gives Vancouver a big-bodied prospect -- 6-foot-4, 211 pounds -- on defense, a position where the club doesn’t have a lot of depth (especially in terms of youth.)

It’s tough to say what the Isles are getting in Mallet. He was taken fairly high (three spots ahead of breakout New Jersey rookie d-man Damon Severson, in fact), but the QMJHL Rimouski product struggled to produce at the AHL level last season, scoring just five points in 59 games for Utica.

As mentioned above, this is Benning’s second AHL-type move in recent days. Last week, the club acquired Will Acton from Edmonton in exchange for Kellen Lain.
