Daniel Alfredsson is expected to announce his retirement formally on Dec. 4 when the Ottawa Senators play host to the New York Islanders.

Alfredsson, 41, was attempting to return for his 19th season; however, back problems has forced him to call it quits.
The former sixth-round pick of the Senators (133rd overall) in 1994, appeared in 1246 regular season games with Ottawa and Detroit scoring 444 goals and 1157 points.
Alfredsson won Olympic gold with Sweden in 2006 and and silver at the 2014 games. He led the Sens to a Stanley Cup final appearance 2007 scoring 14 goals and 22 points in 20 games.
