Legendary hockey coach Viktor Tikhonov has passed away at the age of 84, the KHL announced early Monday morning.

A defenseman during his playing days with Dynamo Moscow, Tikhonov coached the Soviet Union to gold medals at the 1984 and 1988 Olympics and led the United Team to victory in 1992. Tikhonov was also behind the bench when the Soviet Union squad lost to the U.S. at the 1980 Olympics.

Tikhonov also led the Soviet Union to eight World Championship titles, the 1979 Challenge Cup and the 1981 Canada Cup.
