With the Buffalo Sabres in town, the Washington Capitals had a chance for their third consecutive win.
The Sabres, in the running for the Connor McDavid sweepstakes, had other plans and beat the Capitals by a final score of 2-1 on Saturday. Torrey Mitchell scored the winner late in the third period.
The Capitals also lost defenseman Mike Green with an upper-body injury. He left the game and did not return, and is listed as day-to-day.
“Any home loss is tough, any loss is,” said goalie Braden Holtby, as per CSN Washington. “It doesn’t matter to us if they’re at the top or at the bottom.
“We believe we can beat any team in this league and honestly any team in this league can play well on any given night. I don’t think you can say a game against Buffalo is a ‘gimme’ and it showed tonight.”
Not much else Holtby could do. He can’t score goals. He gave up two on 26 shots to the Sabres.
Could’ve used some goal support, though. The 25-year-old Holtby has allowed two or fewer goals in six consecutive games now.
“He’s been stepping up,” Nicklas Backstrom told the Washington Post. “He’s been playing great … We need that. We need everyone going and it starts from the goalie, all the way up to the forwards.”
