Facing each other for the second time in 24 hours, tempers were short between between the Pittsburgh Penguins and New York Islanders.

Penguins’ agitator Steve Downie was, as you would expect, right in the thick of it. He fought Travis Hamonic late in the first period, with both landing some heavy shots. The biggest punch was landed on the scoreboard, however, as the Islanders, thanks to four unanswered goals, defeated the Penguins 4-1.

The Islanders, with their shootout victory on Friday, complete the sweep of the Penguins in this home-and-home set, and have now won eight of their last nine games.

The Islanders are now tied with the Penguins for top spot in the Metropolitan Division.

“Last year is in the past. This is a new hockey club with a new attitude,” Islanders head coach Jack Capuano told NHL.com. “It’s playoff hockey even though you’re early in the season. A team like [Pittsburgh] brings the best out of you.”

As for Downie, well, he was given a misconduct just before the midway point of the third period, with his team trailing by just a goal. He was called for a penalty in the neutral zone, then retaliated by throwing a shoulder into an unsuspecting New York player, causing a scrum.
