The Dallas Stars have been active in recent days, moving a trio of defensemen through either trades or waivers, but general manager Jim Nill believes his plan is starting to come together.

The Stars, coming off their playoff appearance last spring, sit 12th in the Western Conference standings heading into Saturday’s game against the L.A. Kings.

Recently, they’ve traded veteran defenseman Sergei Gonchar to Montreal, lost Kevin Connauton on waivers to Columbus and Brenden Dillon to San Jose in a trade on Friday. Nill has been busy, though he believes locking up center Jason Spezza to a longer-term contract, four years at $30 million, has strengthened that club up the middle, especially with Tyler Seguin putting up the numbers he is - 14 goals and 24 points in 20 games.

“You have to do certain things every day to become a winning team, and you also have to assemble the right players,” Nill told the Dallas Morning News. “It’s a process, and we’re always trying to make the team better.

“We know we’re set down the middle.

“Our depth now is as good as anybody. It’s starting to come together.”
