Jason Demers is originally a San Jose draft pick, all the way back from the seventh round of the 2008 NHL Draft. So, this is the only North American professional organization he’s ever known.

That all changed Friday.

Demers, 26, was shipped to the struggling Dallas Stars in the Central Division in exchange for fellow blueliner Brenden Dillon. It’s a move that includes two teams having difficulties trying to find their way through the first quarter of the season.

For the Stars, Dillon became the third defenseman this week to find a new home, either through trade or being lost on waivers, according to the Dallas Morning News.

Demers seemed caught off guard by the deal, having played 300 career games with the Sharks, and coming off a 34-point season in 2013-14.

“It’s surprising. The words aren’t quite there yet. It hasn’t quite sunk in,” said Demers, as per CSN Bay Area.

“Probably when I fly out there in a little bit it will start to sink in. It’s different. It’s been five, six years since I’ve been here. It’s going to be a change.

“It’s a business, right? These things happen. I guess they saw a way to make the team better. … Hopefully the team does well and hopefully it’s good for both of us.”
