Varlamov suffers another groin injury, Avs recall Pickard

New York Rangers v Colorado Avalanche

at Pepsi Center on April 3, 2014 in Denver, Colorado.

Doug Pensinger

On Tuesday, Colorado announced that goalie Semyon Varlamov was day-to-day with a groin injury and, in a related move, called up Calvin Pickard from AHL Lake Erie.

It’s a concerning development to say the least.

Varlamov has already dealt a groin ailment this season, and was placed on IR in mid-October (missing three games in the process). The Avs didn’t say if this latest setback was related to the original injury, but the fact they’ve had to turn to the 22-year-old Pickard -- their second-round pick at the ’10 NHL Entry Draft -- for a second time this season can’t be seen as a positive development.

Varlamov is 4-5-4 this season with a .918 save percentage and 2.95 GAA. The Avs don’t play again until Thursday versus Washington and, assuming Varlamov is out, Reto Berra will likely get the call against the Caps.
