Predators humiliate Leafs with 9-2 victory

If the Toronto Maple Leafs were looking to make a statement after their 6-2 defeat against the Buffalo Sabres on Saturday...well, they did. It just wasn’t a good one. The Maple Leafs were completely outplayed in a 9-2 loss to the Nashville Predators.

Nashville took a 3-0 lead through 20 minutes and coach Randy Carlyle responded by replacing goaltender Jonathan Bernier with James Reimer. Bernier wasn’t perfect in the first frame, but he also wasn’t the only problem. If Carlyle’s goal was to spark Toronto though then it didn’t work.

Eric Nystrom scored late in the second period to make it 4-0 and that seemed to open the floodgates for the start of the third. With a little less than 15 minutes left to play, Nashville already had a commanding 8-0 lead.

This was the first time that Toronto gave up nine or more goals in a contest since a 12-1 loss to Pittsburgh on Dec. 26, 1991, per TSN 1200’s Ian Mendes. For the Predators, this matched their franchise high for goals scored in a single game, according to the Globe and Mail’s James Mirtle.

Toronto will play against Tampa Bay next. This might not be the best time for them to face Steven Stamkos.
