Kane, Versteeg redeem themselves after Friday’s gaffes

The fact that the Chicago Blackhawks suffered a 4-1 loss to Detroit on Friday isn’t that big of an issue in the grand scheme of things, but the way they lost was disturbing. Chicago made some sloppy plays, with Kris Versteeg and Patrick Kane’s juicy turnovers essentially costing the Blackhawks the contest. It’s appropriate then that those two were the heroes in Chicago’s 6-2 victory over Dallas Sunday night.

The final score suggests this contest was a blowout, but that wasn’t the case for most of the game. Chicago and Dallas traded blows in the first period and went into the intermission tied 2-2. That’s the way the score stayed until the third period when Kane netted what proved to be the game-winning marker.

Chicago maintained the one goal lead until 12:34 of the third period, when Jonathan Toews started a run of three Chicago goals within three minutes. Kris Versteeg scored during that stretch and given the attention his “cardinal sin” got, it seems only right to show him under better circumstances:

Versteeg and Kane each finished the game with three points. Brad Richards, who was playing in his 1,000th career game, recorded two assists.

The only bad news for Chicago is that it lost defenseman Trevor van Riemsdyk after he was struck by the puck in the leg. Blackhawks coach Joel Quenneville warned that he “got hurt pretty bad,” per Chicago Tribune’s Chris Kuc.

As for the Stars, they’ve now lost two in a row and are 6-8-4 this season. It might still be early, but their slump is getting troubling.
