The Detroit Red Wings and Tampa Bay Lightning had some impressive moments tonight and neither could pull away in regulation time. In the end it was Ryan Callahan who proved to be the difference in the Lightning’s 4-3 shootout victory.
Callahan also collected two assists tonight, but Steven Stamkos was the best player on the ice. He fired a rocket of a shot that was ruled a goal after a video review. That wasn’t the only blast he sent by Red Wings goaltender Jimmy Howard though:
Midway through the second period, the Lightning had a 3-1 lead, but Red Wings forward Darren Helm took advantage of a power-play opportunity to score his first goal of the season and cut Tampa Bay’s lead in half. Gustav Nyquist showed off some slick moves to tie the game in the third period.
Detroit has only won one of its last five games, but it has managed to secure three consolation points over that span. Taking the Lightning to a shootout isn’t that bad of an outcome, given that Tampa Bay has now won six straight games and is 11-3-1 this season.
