Curtis Lazar will go back to Edmonton this season, but as a member of the Ottawa Senators.

On Wednesday, the Sens announced they were keeping the 19-year-old rookie for the remainder of the season. Lazar, Ottawa’s first-round pick (17th overall) at the 2013 NHL Entry Draft, was eligible to be returned to his junior team in WHL Edmonton having only appeared in nine games this season, but will play in his 10th on Thursday when the Sens take on the Wild.

That Lazar is sticking shouldn’t come as much of a surprise.

The kid has been solid for the 6-3-2 Senators, scoring three assists in nine games while averaging over 13 minutes per. The former Oil King assisted on Patrick Wiercioch’s game-winning tally against Detroit on Tuesday night and has earned head coach Paul MacLean’s trust in several important situations, most notably on the penalty kill -- Lazar is averaging just under one minute of shorthanded TOI per game, ninth among all rookie forwards.
