Depth, tested: With Gibson and Andersen hurt, Ducks recall Bobkov

People have been talking about Anaheim’s goaltending depth for years, and now we’ll get to see how truly deep it is.

With John Gibson and Frederik Andersen shelved with injuries, the Ducks have recalled Igor Bobkov from AHL Norfolk. Bobkov will now be one of two American League goalies in Anaheim, joining Admirals teammate Jason LaBarbera with the big club.

(LaBarbera got an emergency start on Sunday against Colorado, and emerged with a 3-2 win. Goalie coach Dwayne Roloson, at age 45, dressed as the backup.)

It’s quite amazing things have gotten to this point for the Ducks. Last year, the club was so flush in net it was able to trade Viktor Fasth to Edmonton, then let Jonas Hiller walk in free agency to Calgary; that still left Anaheim with a quality tandem in Andersen and Gibson, both of whom saw postseason action a year ago. (Bobkov, a third-round pick in 2009, actually had to spend time in ECHL Utah last year because there were so many ahead of him in the pecking order.)

What remains unclear is how much, if at all, Bobkov and LaBarbera will play. The Ducks don’t play again until Wednesday -- at home versus the Islanders -- and it sounds as though Gibson and Andersen are day-to-day with their respective ailments.
