Video: Nolan runs Helm from behind, massive melee ensues

Screen Shot 2014-10-31 at 6.48.16 PM

Things got a tad nasty between the Detroit Red Wings and L.A. Kings in the third period of Friday’s game.

A massive melee broke out early in the third period when Jordan Nolan hit Darren Helm from behind into the glass, resulting in a boarding minor for the Kings’ forward. He was then grabbed and thrown to the ice by Detroit defenseman Jonathan Ericsson, and suddenly there was a pile-up of humanity inside the L.A. blue line.

Helm remained in the game.

The Red Wings jumped out to a 4-0 lead over the defending Stanley Cup champions before the first period had come to an end, then held on for the 5-2 victory. The final score wasn’t completely indicative of how close this game could’ve been.

The Kings began to chip away, cutting the deficit to two goals early in the third period on a short-handed goal from Tyler Toffoli. Shortly after, Dustin Brown was awarded a penalty shot after being tripped on a breakaway. He didn’t get the desired result on the attempt, pretty much shooting the puck right at goalie Jimmy Howard, who barely had to move to make the save.

Earlier in the game, fans at the Joe Louis Arena stood to show their support for the legendary Gordie Howe, who suffered a stroke on Sunday.
