Sam Reinhart’s NHL cameo has ended, as most expected, after nine games.

On Friday, Buffalo announced they were sending Reinhart -- the second overall pick at the 2014 NHL Entry Draft -- back to his junior team in WHL Kootenay. Reinhart, who doesn’t turn 19 for another week, looked overmatched at times on a bad Sabres team that’s won just two times this season; he sat twice as a healthy scratch and managed to score just one assist in his nine big-league contests.

As such, he’s now headed back to the Ice for his fourth year of junior. It’ll be interesting to see how Reinhart plays at the WHL level; he torched the competition last year with 105 points in 60 games, then added 23 more in 13 playoff games.

Reinhart will also be a very strong candidate to return to Team Canada for the 2015 World Juniors, which will be held in Montreal and Toronto. He made the team last year and fared reasonably well, scoring two goals and four points in seven games as Canada finished out of the medals (fourth place) for the second straight time.
