The Detroit Red Wings have completed the first eight games of their regular season schedule and are getting ready for their ninth tonight (7:30 p.m. ET, NBCSN), so at this point some might have assumed that Daniel Alfredsson won’t be signing with them. That might not be the case though.

Alfredsson is still trying to recover from the back injury that’s plagued him since training camp and if he gets to a point where he feels healthy enough to play, the 41-year-old might still join Detroit.

“Nothing has changed from my perspective,” Red Wings general manager Ken Holland said, per the Detroit News. “We’re not putting any timetable on it. Daniel said he was feeling good but is not to the point where he can talk to me about what would be his next move.

“I haven’t heard from Daniel (since). We’re giving him time. Nothing has changed.”

Alfredsson surprised the hockey world in the summer of 2013 when he left the Ottawa Senators to sign with Detroit. Although he’s well past his prime, he still played an important role in the Red Wings’ battle for a playoff spot last season. He had 11 goals and 49 points in 68 games.

With 1,157 career points, Alfredsson is just 13 shy of tying Bobby Hull for 50th place on the NHL’s all-time scoring list.
