Although it’s still early in the season, there were some that saw tonight’s game against the Buffalo Sabres as a must-win for the Toronto Maple Leafs. Whether or not you buy into that sentiment, Toronto certainly looked good in its 4-0 victory over Buffalo.

The Sabres couldn’t get anything going tonight and managed only 10 shots on goal as a result. Yes, 10 shots. The Sabres established a new franchise record for the least shots in a single contest, per Sportsnet’s Chris Johnston. For the Maple Leafs, it tied their record for the fewest shots allowed, according to MapleLeafs.com writer David Alter.

Sabres defenseman Tyler Myers called it “rock bottom.” Leafs goaltender Jonathan Bernier called it “probably” the easiest shutout of his career, according to the Globe and Mail’s James Mirtle.

“That was an embarrassing effort,” Myers remarked.

To make matters worse, this was the fourth time in six games that the Buffalo Sabres have been shutout. As hard as it is to imagine, the Sabres’ offense might actually be worse than it was last season when they averaged just 1.83 goals per contest.

In a related story, 2015 draft prospect Connor McDavid shot a puck into the crossbar hard enough to make it explode today.
