Report: Billionaire wants NHL team in Vegas; new Coyotes owner ‘sees flipping the team as a good investment’

Las Vegas

From the New York Post:

Billionaire William Foley is betting hockey will sell in Sin City .

Foley is in advanced talks with the NHL about bringing the first major league sports franchise to Las Vegas, The Post has learned.

“He’s the real deal,” a source said. “He has deep pockets.

His goal is to bring an NHL team to Vegas starting with the 2017-18 season, which would mark the league’s 100th anniversary.

That’s the first part of the story. The next part involves the Arizona Coyotes, whose ownership recently agreed to sell a controlling stake of the franchise to Andrew Barroway.

From the Post:

One scenario is for Foley to buy the money-losing Arizona Coyotes and move them to Las Vegas, a source said. ... Barroway sees flipping the team as a good investment, the source added.

Thank you, dramatic chipmunk.

Now, it needs to be noted that the NHL told The Post that it’s “categorically wrong” that Foley is planning to buy the Coyotes and move them to Vegas, and Coyotes CEO Anthony LeBlanc, reiterating what he already reiterated here, told The Post that the “Coyotes are absolutely not relocating.”

Regardless, there remains a ton of skepticism about the Coyotes’ future in Glendale, and reports like the one above will only add to that.
