Philly has summoned the Ghost.

On Friday, and in the wake of injuries to Braydon Coburn and Andrew MacDonald, the Flyers recalled promising blueliner Shayne Gostisbehere from AHL Lehigh Valley.

Gostisbehere, or “Ghost” as he’s commonly referred to, was the club’s third-round pick (78th overall) at the 2012 NHL Entry Draft, but rose to prominence for Union College last year, helping the Dutchmen capture their first-ever NCAA title. He was named Most Outstanding Player of the Frozen Four after recording a goal, two assists and a record plus-7 rating vs. the Golden Gophers in the final, and was also named a finalist for the Hobey Baker Award.

Though he only has five games of big-league experience, the hype around Ghost has been big for a while -- though to be fair, part of that is him being part of a young crop of Flyers defensemen that includes Samuel Morin, Robert Hagg and Travis Sanheim. The quartet is expected to be the core of Philly’s future blueline, but Gostisbehere will be the first (presumably) to make his NHL debut.

Philly hosts Detroit tomorrow at Wells Fargo.
