Miller on Benn goal: ‘I have done a lot of stupid things, but that is a new one’

Ryan Miller acknowledged that Tuesday wasn’t his night. That’s quite the understatement. He was pulled early in the second period after allowing five goals on 13 shots in Vancouver’s eventual 6-3 loss to the Dallas Stars.

Miller didn’t look great on some of those markers, but Jamie Benn’s goal in the opening minute of the second periods stood out as Miller basically knocked an otherwise missed shot into his own net:

“It hit my blocker and it hit my knob (of his stick),” Miller told the Vancouver Sun. “Like, I couldn’t do that again if I tried...he kind of fanned on it and I reached for it and it hit my blocker and was going wide and hits my stick, I think. I don’t know what to say. I haven’t done that one before in the NHL. I have done a lot of stupid things, but that is a new one.”

He also had some bad luck, as was the case when he was taken out by teammate Chris Tanev before Tyler Seguin’s goal:

“I almost wanted to laugh,” Miller said. “It’s just ridiculous situations and they are going to come up.”

Canucks coach Willie Desjardins acknowledged that the Stars certainly looked fortunate with some of their goals, but he argued that wasn’t actually the case. He credited the Stars for using their speed to their advantage and going to the net to pressure the Canucks.

Either way, it’s fair to say that this isn’t the homecoming Desjardins had in mind.
