New York Islanders defenseman Thomas Hickey left Tuesday’s game against the Toronto Maple Leafs after taking a skate to the face and suffering a cut that needed immediate attention.
The incident happened early in the third period.
Hickey fell along the side boards trying to check Mike Santorelli. As he was skating by, Santorelli’s skate came up and clipped Hickey in the face. The game needed to be stopped so that Hickey could be taken to the Islanders dressing room.
The Islanders were trailing Toronto 5-2 at the time. Goalie Jaroslav Halak was pulled after the second period.
