Ruff blasts Dallas for playing ‘garbage hockey’ vs. Flyers

Dallas has to hope that its 6-5 overtime loss to the Philadelphia Flyers doesn’t prove to be a microcosm of its season.

The Stars offense, bolstered by the offseason addition of Jason Spezza, was on full display last night, but their defense was lackluster and they consequently blew three separate leads, including a 4-2 edge going into the third period.

Stars coach Lindy Ruff didn’t sugarcoat his opinion after the game, saying that his team played “garbage hockey,” per the Dallas Morning News.

“We lost focus of what we need to be,” Ruff said. “All of the sudden, we thought, ‘Let’s try to score six or seven,’ but that’s not the way this league works. When you’re up a couple of goals, you defend. You don’t give up situations, you don’t take bad penalties. You only get away with so much so long, and we paid dearly for it.”

The Stars’ defensive problems might be difficult to solve though. Their blueline was a concern before the season began and the situation was further complicated last night after Patrik Nemeth suffered an arm injury that is expected to sideline him for a “good period of time.”
