These are interesting times for the Chicago Blackhawks.

They’re a little more than $2 million over the salary cap, according to Capgeek.com, with less than a week until the beginning of the 2014-15 regular season.

With the possibility of swapping a player out of Chicago in a bid for the Blackhawks to get below the $69 million cap, one of the names that has come up in trade speculation is Nick Leddy. The chatter seems to have reached a new level heading into the weekend.

Sportsnet’s Nick Kypreos reported via Twitter on Friday that he has heard seven teams are interested in the 23-year-old Leddy.

And then, there is this, which doesn’t do anything at all to halt the speculation (view the story from the Chicago Tribune).

Leddy, again this is according to Capgeek.com, has a $2.7 million cap hit for this season. He is a restricted free agent at the end of this season.

The cap issue - and the trade rumours that follow with a team trying to get below the limit - is one the Blackhawks are fully aware, according to general manager Stan Bowman.

It appears the Blackhawks have a plan. No specifics have been divulged as of yet.

"(The salary cap’s) gotten a lot of attention, and rightfully so,” Bowman said, as per CSN Chicago.

“But what I’ve tried to say all along is that we’re going to get it worked out and we’re going to be compliant come (Thursday). It’s one of those topics where we’ve had a lot of discussions internally, we know how we’re going to make it work.

“But I don’t want to lose focus of some of the exciting things we’re looking forward to next year.”

Leddy has already responded to the trade talk during training camp.

“It’s not something I can control. It’s out of my control,” said Leddy. “For me, what I need to focus on is getting better every day and just focus on the team.”
