Defenseman Stephane Robidas’ 2013-14 campaign was one he would probably like to forget. He was limited to 38 regular season games and three playoff contests because he broke his right leg on two separate occasions. His latest injury came in April and until recently he still wasn’t cleared for contact.

Nevertheless, Robidas hopes to play in Friday’s preseason game in preparation for the Toronto Maple Leafs’ season opener on Oct. 8.

“I feel great on the ice,” Robidas said, per TSN. “The plan is to play the game Friday against Detroit and after that we’ve got a few more practices with the team. I expect to be ready for that first game.”

He inked a three-year, $9 million deal with the Maple Leafs on July 1. Toronto is hoping that he’ll be a big part of its defense and he certainly has a long track record of success. He’s already 37 years old though, so that contract is something of a risk.
