Berube takes Flyers’ preseason loss seriously

New Jersey earned a commanding 3-1 victory over the Philadelphia Flyers tonight. That’s obviously not be a wide margin -- especially given that New Jersey’s third goal was an empty netter -- but the Devils also out shot Philadelphia 13-2 in the first period and 22-5 in the second.

It was the type of game the Flyers are happy doesn’t count, but that doesn’t mean head coach Craig Berube took it lightly. He felt the team’s effort was “unacceptable,” per the Philadelphia Inquirer’s Sam Carchidi.

“I don’t care if it’s preseason or not,” Berube added, which seems fair given that his predecessor lost his job in part because of how poorly the Flyers’ 2013 preseason went.

Former bench boss Peter Laviolette was fired after just three regular season games in 2013-14 campaign.

“I thought our training camp, quite frankly, was one of the worst training camps I had ever seen,” owner Ed Snider said in defense of the firing. The Flyers fell to 1-7-0 before Berube was able to start turning things around.

Philadelphia wants to avoid a similarly ugly start and how they perform now will have an influence on that.
