Brendan Perlini’s time with the Arizona Coyotes’ organization has gotten off to an unfortunate start.

He was taken with the 12th overall pick in the 2014 NHL Entry Draft, but he suffered a broken hand when he absorbed a slash during rookie camp. It’s still not clear how long he’ll be sidelined, but it’s been revealed that he needs to undergo surgery, per Fox Sports Arizona’s Craig Morgan.

Perlini wasn’t expected to make the team in the first place, but this has hindered his ability to take full advantage of his first training camp. When he’s recovered, he’ll continue his career in the Ontario Hockey League.

He had 34 goals and 71 points in 58 games with the Niagara IceDogs in 2013-14. He’s known for his skating ability and offensive upside, but at 6-foot-3, 205 pounds, he already has some size too.
