Malone scores in Rangers debut

Ryan Malone’s journey back to the NHL got off to a nice start on Tuesday, as he scored in his first preseason game for the New York Rangers:

The goal came on the power play, following a nice feed from youngster J.T. Miller.

Malone -- a six-time 20-goals scorer and former U.S. Olympian -- joined the Rangers earlier this month, signing a two-way deal just weeks after pleading no contest to a DUI charge and agreeing to a pre-trial intervention program for a cocaine possession charge.

Both charges stemmed from an April arrest while Malone was a member of the Tampa Bay Lightning; he didn’t play for the team again following the incident and, in late June, the Lightning bought out the last of Malone’s seven-year, $31.5 million contract.

The 34-year-old veteran is in tough to crack the Blueshirts roster this season, but could possibly replace some of the goalscoring lost on the wing following the departure of Benoit Pouliot, who had 15 for the Rangers last season.
