Rangers to name new captain at end of camp

McDonagh

The 27th captain in New York Rangers history will soon be named.

On Wednesday, head coach Alain Vigneault announced the team would reveal its new captain at the end of training camp, filling the vacancy created when Ryan Callahan was traded to Tampa Bay at last year’s deadline.

According to a report last week from the New York Daily News, it’s expected that Ryan McDonagh will be named the next captain of the club. The 25-year-old rearguard doesn’t have a ton of experience with a letter on his sweater -- fellow blueliners Dan Girardi and Marc Staal have served as alternates -- but McDonagh has emerged as the heart-and-soul of the Blueshirts over the last two years, and arguably their best player (not named Henrik Lundqvist.)

The Rangers also made a long-term commitment to McDonagh last summer, inking him to a six-year, $28.2 million contract extension.
