A pivotal season for the Pittsburgh Penguins isn’t off to a great start.

On Thursday, GM Jim Rutherford announced that captain Sidney Crosby and Evgeni Malkin will miss the start of training camp as a precautionary measure for injuries suffered while prepping for camp.

Crosby, 27, had been dealing with a wrist injury throughout the summer but recently said he was at full health and ready for the season. It was thought the Pens captain was headed for surgery, but Crosby opted for rest and rehabilitation rather than going under the knife.

Malkin, 28, was hobbled by a foot injury late last season. At the moment, it’s unclear if the latest ailments are merely things Crosby and Malkin aggravated, or if they’re new injuries entirely.

Sidney Crosby took part in an informal skate with #pens players in Pittsburgh on Tuesday. Injury is believed to have happened there.
