Video: Detroit’s DeKeyser flies with the Blue Angels

Sep 3, 2014, 10:00 PM EDT

Detroit Red Wings defenseman Danny DeKeyser jumped on a unique opportunity on Tuesday, as he flew in a Blue Angels F/A-18 Hornet jet at Selfridge Air National Guard Base in southeast Michigan. He raved about the experience to … and not just because he didn’t need to use one of the barf bags he brought with him.

“It was awesome,” DeKeyser told moments after flying with the Blue Angels. “I’m still feeling a little woozy right now. I’ve never experienced anything like that.”

Red Wings TV shared some footage of the 24-year-old soaking it all in:

Now, if the Red Wings could just get DeKeyser out of the negotiating danger zone

Good on DeKeyser for not heaving and good on PHT for reporting this ‘quality’ story !

Sounds like an awesome ride, and I doubt I’d turn one down myself. Just curious who pays for rides of this kind. The player? The Red Wings? Taxpayers?

Taxpayers pay for it just like they pay for all of the military training. Now on that note, please remember the training part. Every pilot in the military has to fly so many hours per month for training. If he happens to be doing a VIP ride like this or a flyover on a stadium it all counts as training. I prefer the flyovers because it they have to be in a certain area at a certain time so accuracy comes into play. In the end, that plane would have flown with that pilot for that time whether anyone was in the back seat or not.
I was lucky enough to get 3 rides in the back seat of an F-16 during my active duty time and they were some of the best times of my life. Glad to see the seat getting used!

exactly, if its gonna be in the air anyway might as well take a willing ridealong, i’m sure dekeyser pays his fair share of taxes anyway

Last year one of the broadcasters for Fox Sports Detroit went up, and earlier this year a reporter for a Kalamazoo TV station went up as well. I’m sure there have been dozens of others that I haven’t heard about.
