Crosby arrest report refuted by Ottawa police (Updated)

Sep 3, 2014, 9:37 AM EDT

Ottawa Police have issued a statement denying they had any dealings with Pittsburgh Penguins captain Sidney Crosby following reports of his arrest in the Canadian capital. From the department’s Twitter account:

The statement came after an early-morning report from a parent company of the Ottawa Sun, the QMI Agency (the story has since been pulled). Per Puck Daddy, here’s the original copy:

Pittsburgh Penguins centre Sidney Crosby was arrested by Ottawa Police late Tuesday while driving a rented Porsche, sources have told QMI Agency.

Reasons of his arrest were unknown, but appear to be driving related.

Sources say Crosby was taken to the Ottawa police headquarters on Elgin street for fingerprinting and a mugshot. It is unknown at this time why the NHL star was in Ottawa.

Ottawa Police have been unable to be reached for comment.

The Canadian Press was able to reach the Ottawa Police, however, and according to the CP the duty desk said Crosby’s arrest “never happened.”

The story of Crosby’s arrest was strange to begin with, and became even stranger following this tweet from TSN’s Darren Dreger:

Still no word on how the original arrest story came to be in the first place.

Update 1: The Penguins have released the following statement…

“The Pittsburgh Penguins have spoken to Sidney Crosby. He is not in Canada, and was not in Canada yesterday. He is continuing his training in preparation for training camp.”

Update 2: QMI has issued an apology/retraction for its original story…

Earlier today, QMI Agency reported that Pittsburgh Penguins centre Sidney Crosby was arrested by Ottawa Police late Tuesday on driving-related charges.

There was no basis for the story and QMI unreservedly retracts the story in its entirety.

QMI regrets the error.

kudos to pht for responsible reporting and not running with this story.

    • upper90cheese - Sep 3, 2014 at 10:04 AM

I smell a cover up. The NHL will do anything to protect Crosby and the Pens.

      • hockey412 - Sep 3, 2014 at 10:35 AM

Arrest records are public. I don’t think you can just cover them up.

      • nhstateline - Sep 3, 2014 at 2:53 PM

What did they do ? Sneak Sid out of the downtown Ottawa police headquarters, drive him to the Ottawa airport,in a car trunk, rent a plane using a fictitious name, payoff the US Immigration and Customs folks at the inspection point in Ottawa then fly Crosby to Vail where they put him in the trunk of another car and drove him to the training center ? The sad thing is some people might actually believe that. The NHL isn’t able to do all that and they wouldn’t anyway.

    • atwatercrushesokoye - Sep 3, 2014 at 2:09 PM

I’m not a Crosby fan but I hope he sues and wins against QMI for reporting this garbage without any basis in reality.

And in Canada I don’t believe arrests are public record, at least not like in the States, mugshots aren’t released to the public, as they would be down there.

      • nothanksimdriving123 - Sep 3, 2014 at 2:29 PM

Since the agency has already retracted the story and apologized, Crosby would not have much on which to base a lawsuit.

      • atwatercrushesokoye - Sep 3, 2014 at 3:14 PM

I agree with you, it’s just annoying that a simple retraction gets them off the hook for printing an outright lie, if they hadn’t been so quick to scoop everyone, and had actually done their jobs then they would have realized that the story was garbage.

  2. girouxvy - Sep 3, 2014 at 9:44 AM

Damn! Run with the story anyway!

It’s false plus the only person who gets arrested in Ottawa is Claude Giroux. #GrabAnAss

  6. milkmemalkin - Sep 3, 2014 at 10:11 AM

Clearly this is smear campaign against Crosby probably by some flyers fans. they can’t come to terms that their captain is a savage alcoholic with a strange fetish for the rear ends of police officers. while Crosby is obviously innocent, false accusations like this damage his name nonetheless. it is sad to see people have such little respect for a player like Crosby.

    • girouxvy - Sep 3, 2014 at 11:48 AM

      Wow. Get over it.

      • girouxvy - Sep 3, 2014 at 6:44 PM

        Savage alcoholic?

      • 7mantel - Sep 3, 2014 at 7:07 PM

Great video ,hard to argue why hockey fans do not like Sid . A lot of good players get the benefit of calls but the diving and borderline calls in this video are over the top ! Great player who plays the system !

      • patthehockeyfan - Sep 3, 2014 at 7:43 PM

        Hey, mantel!

Had lunch @ Barracuda’s yesterday. You were right about the crabcakes! Yum!

Also, some really terrific background music was playing (owner’s iPod, I was told). Made for a great lunchtime. Thanks for the suggestion!

  7. jasminedonut - Sep 3, 2014 at 10:15 AM

I still think he should be stripped of the Captaincy for this. He is a Justin Beiber wannabe, trying to one up Bieber.

    • dueman - Sep 3, 2014 at 10:26 AM

So, you think that Crosby should be stripped of his captaincy for something that never happened? Did you and upper90cheese decide to have a “who’s the bigger moron contest” today? If you did, then you get my vote…

  14. petersteelewannabe - Sep 3, 2014 at 11:14 AM

As a Flyers fan, still attempting to somehow convince myself Giroux’s arrest earlier this year isn’t as humiliating as it is, I really, really was hoping this (whatever it was) was true. Back to feeling shame…

    • kellyb9 - Sep 3, 2014 at 1:54 PM

I’m a Flyers fan, and I think it’s funny. For the most part, It was completely harmless, and quite honestly, I don’t pay taxes to Canada so I don’t care. Crosby getting arrested for something vehicle related is a little less harmless. I’m really glad it isn’t true.

      • petersteelewannabe - Sep 3, 2014 at 1:58 PM

true Kelly, assuming it would have been alcohol-related, it would not have been a joking matter.

  15. chanceoffleury - Sep 3, 2014 at 11:19 AM

Crosby getting fake arrested, videos of Malkin at a strip club 5 years ago. Where will it end????? Pens should probably just give the C to Hornqvist and call it a summer.

    • pitpenguinsrulez - Sep 3, 2014 at 11:24 AM

Give the “C” to Rico Fata

      • atwatercrushesokoye - Sep 3, 2014 at 3:19 PM

As a Flames fan, I shamefully feel the need to admit that the Flames made Rico Fata a first round pick, perhaps drafting like that is why they are where they are?

he wont, he’s probably laughing like the rest of us

  17. blomfeld - Sep 3, 2014 at 11:29 AM

Notwithstanding this report from Ottawa which is ‘likely’ erroneous, the fact remains that Crosby still hasn’t formally apologized for his ‘queue jumping’ antics at that DMV office in Pennsylvania last year … and that’s ‘completely’ unacceptable. For as everyone knows, being a famous athlete does ‘not’ preclude one from exercising good manners in public and nor does it preclude one from doing the ‘right’ thing. If Elvis can interrupt his ‘wildly’ successful musical career in-order to go and defend his country in Germany for two whole years, then surely Crosby can find it within himself to stand in a queue line with his fellow man for a paltry hour or so !

    • jdlinder11 - Sep 3, 2014 at 11:40 AM

You are aware that if you make an appointment ahead of time, you can skip the queue. This option is open to any person.

      • broadstreetbeatdown - Sep 3, 2014 at 2:33 PM

Not that it matters, but Mr. Crosby did not have an appointment.

    • hockey412 - Sep 3, 2014 at 11:51 AM

“Crosby can find it within himself to stand in a queue line with his fellow man…”….the problem being when his fellow man says “HEY! YOUR SIDNEY CROSBY!!” and 400 other fellow men rush the scene, snapping photos and calling their friends, taking selfies, causing a stir, stepping on each other feet which inevitably leads to punches thrown, riots, cars being smashed, fires, dogs and cats living together…

Or they could just usher him in and out so there’s no senseless bloodshed. Awesome that you brought that one back up though.

      • broadstreetbeatdown - Sep 3, 2014 at 1:23 PM

Really, Sydney Crosby causes riots everywhere he goes? How ever does the poor lad survive in the big bad public? Being a decorated veteran of the anomaly that is the Pennsylvania DMV, I can assure you the only riots ever started in there are due to the crappy service and lazy a$$, worthless employees.

    • JoeAvg - Sep 3, 2014 at 1:49 PM

      1) Elvis is dead
      2) He was only relevant for a couple of years while he was alive
      3) If he was alive, he would want you to stop posting his video clips on a hockey site

      • blomfeld - Sep 3, 2014 at 11:59 PM

        That’s brilliant Finklestein !

So let’s see then … Delta Airlines should close shop because the Wright brothers are dead, civil rights should be rolled back because MLK is no more and ‘decency’ should be abolished because Jesus is long gone ? Hell ya ! … that sure makes sense to me !

ps: kiss my ‘bar graph’ loser and go back to your ‘rat infested’ tunnel asap ! … ya dig Willard ?

    • tk1966 - Sep 3, 2014 at 8:43 PM

You obviously don’t realize that it was the DMV that moved him to the front of the line, and that they freely admit doing so. This is done frequently for anyone who would fall under the category of celebrity. The reason is to avoid chaos. Can you imagine if he had to wait, and the wait at the DMV can be hours. Every person there would be on their cell phone calling their friends, relatives, etc. And how many of those would show up to see Crosby (or fill int he name of any celebrity). Thats the chaos the DMV makes the effort to avoid.

But, even with this enlightenment, feel free to turn it into Crosby being in the wrong. That better fits your narrow minded narrative.

      • blomfeld - Sep 4, 2014 at 12:30 AM

Despite the reality that ‘stateside’ Crosby garners little more than a passing glance, the fact remains that any ‘decent’ man irrespective of his station in life will always ‘fall in’ with his fellow man when confronted with a group and/or social predicament in life. What Crosby did that day in the great state of Pennsylvania was ‘wrong’ and so now both he and his ‘weak-kneed’ supporters like you will pay dearly, God willing …

      • tk1966 - Sep 4, 2014 at 2:16 PM

So, Mr. Blomfeld, let me see if I get your point. Even though the DMV has a policy, Crosby should have said to them “Sorry, but I will not follow your established policy. I demand to wait in line like everyone else, and potentially create a disturbance by my very presence, thereby making everyone’s wait even longer and more chaotic and disrupting the already slow, tedious wait for everyone. I refuse to be given any preferential treatment, even thought this treatment is not because I am deemed special, but because it is to make everyone’s day go more smoothly. In otherwords, I refuse to abide by your rules.”

Hmmm… sounds to me like, had he done this and created the disturbance that was intended to be avoided, he would have received your grief and ire.

Just admit it, no matter what he would have done, you’d have held him to be at fault for doing the wrong thing. Your logic is that of a petulant, pouting child. If mommy gives you vaninnal pudding, you cry and demand chocolate. But if mommy gives you chocolate, you demand vanilla. Whaaaa!

      • blomfeld - Sep 4, 2014 at 11:49 PM

Okay TK, allow me to retort as follows:

        1) Crosby is ‘not’ a celebrity in America or the great state of Pennsylvania !

        2) Crosby is ‘not’ above the code of basic civil behavior in America and/or any society !

        3) Crosby is ‘not’ a decorated war veteran, philanthropist or civil ‘beacon’ at large !

The record here at PHT will show that I actually acknowledge Sidney Crosby to be the ‘best’ player in the NHL today. Nonetheless, that does nothing to deter from the fact that ‘good’ values must always carry the day, irrespective of whether one is a king, a carpenter or a lowly house cleaner. And in that vein, I contend that what Crosby did last year at the DMV office there in the great state of Pennsylvania, was wrong, self-serving and completely ‘inconsistent’ with the notion of egalitarianism. As such, both he and his ‘apologists’ such as you will now pay for what you’ve done in ‘no’ uncertain terms.

    • tk1966 - Sep 5, 2014 at 11:07 AM

Blom, I guess since you used numbers to make your point, you win. How can anyone argue with numerical opinions. You are like Blaise Pascal, Alan Turing, Friedrich Nietzsche and Plato all rolled into one. We should all bow at your feet as you tell us the truth and the way using enumerated lists to prove your baseless logic to be true. All hail Blomfeld!

  18. Wineshard - Sep 3, 2014 at 12:21 PM

  20. 2wenty4our7even - Sep 3, 2014 at 3:52 PM

I am assuming that the Penguins will now sign someone to go after QMI, seeing that Crosby never fights his own battles. Any idea who is available?

  21. jmikeymania - Sep 3, 2014 at 5:24 PM

Blomfield…The DMV incident was not Crosby’s doing. The DMV pushed him through because fans were calling people to come down and take pics etc… They got Crosby out of there to avoid a bigger crowd than there already was. Fact check before you run with your Crosby hate. Calm down.

    • blomfeld - Sep 4, 2014 at 12:50 AM

so based on your logic then, Jesus should have just thrown in the towel when he was arrested and said … “you know, this crap about being a ‘good’ person and all is for the birds man” … is that supposed to be ‘the deal’ then ? … the bottom line as I see it is that leeches like you need to be ‘dealt with’ asap ! .. and the sooner that happens, the better for all ! :)
