BUFFALO — Connor McDavid will get a chance to show fans in Buffalo what he’s all about… Just not as a member of the Sabres. Not yet, anyway.

The Sabres announced they’ll be hosting an Ontario Hockey League game between McDavid’s Erie Otters and the Niagara Ice Dogs on October 22. McDavid was on hand at First Niagara Center for the announcement along with Otters GM Sherry Bassin as well as coach Kris Knoblauch.

“I’ve been to a couple Sabres games,” McDavid said. “I was here last year and it’s a pretty nice spot. The fans are crazy here – they’re great. I’m really excited to play here with my team.”

McDavid said it’s crossed his mind about what it might be like to play for the Sabres, but said his focus for now is on the season ahead with the Otters.

“Right now it’s all about getting back with the Erie Otters and having a good training camp, preseason, and a good start to the year,” McDavid said. “That’s what it’s all about and you’ve just got to worry about yourself. Then maybe when we get a little closer to the draft and the season’s over I think you start picturing which organization you’ll play with. But right now it’s all about having a good year.”

Both McDavid and Jack Eichel will have a chance to play in Buffalo this year. Eichel will be part of the USA All-American Prospects game in September. You can’t beat having both of the top prospects in next summer’s draft get a chance to see what it’s like to play in Buffalo when the Sabres could wind up with one of the top picks.

That awkward moment when the Hockey’s most promising young star gets drafted by Florida

and then in 3 years Florida is moved to Quebec City or Seattle and all is right again

    Jack Eichel > Connor McDavid

Stop smoking whatever you are smoking. McDavid is clearly better than Eichel. Eichel will be a star no doubt but McDavid will become a superstar.

      Maybe?

The most enjoyable part of this upcoming season will be watching these kids battle for the top spot, and cheering for the Islanders to loose so we get both. Can’t wait.

Unfortunately the NHL will never let us get either of them. The lottery results will have the Sabres picking no better than 3rd.#rigged #nogoalforever

If they finish last, they will have the 2nd pick.

Or if you must sink low, perhaps the STL blues failing to make the playoffs.

To be honest, that smacks of desperation. No way.

Not out of the realm that it could happen but not probable…seems Hitch has a knack for going in and righting the ship and then gets fired because he loses the team. Expectations were high last season and heightened with the Miller trade and then came the thud of under achieving come the play-offs. We’ll see how the players respond to Hitch and the disappointment of last years play-offs

It genuinely seems like Sabres fans across the hockey world are excited for this season. If for no other reason than it’ll be over and they could have, perhaps, a franchise altering player.

I grew up in Erie and developed my love for the game of hockey watching the Otters/OHL games. Having Connor their has brought a lot of positive things to the city and the organization. I wish him the best.

After all of the talk about Buffalo lobbying successfully for a 2 year roll in for the new draft lottery and everyone assuming Buffalo will be right there picking top 2 I think it would be hilarious (and awesome) if they just came from nowhere and finished in a playoff spot this year. Their fans deserve it, although I know you’ve got your hearts set on 1 more bad year before it happens.

So Buffalo is planning on pulling a Pittsburgh and tanking on purpose? Who’d a “thunk” it.

    • thomasvanek - Aug 21, 2014 at 9:36 PM

Tanking on purpose? I think you are mistaking tanking with being a legitimate bad team. The Sabres are rebuilding and being bad usually comes with rebuilding.

The Leafs WILL get McDavid and the NHL wants the Leafs to get him! You just can’t keep having the richest NHL franchise and the most embarrassing NHL franchise continue to fail year after year after year and remain relavent. Rules be damned…where there is a will there is a way!

    • atwatercrushesokoye - Aug 21, 2014 at 9:34 PM

If that were the case you’d think they wouldn’t have waited 48 years to do something. The Leafs may make a lot of money but they haven’t won a cup since the league grew beyond 6 teams, there’s absolutely no relevance when it comes to Toronto hockey, and there hasn’t been in a very long time.

    • atwatercrushesokoye - Aug 21, 2014 at 9:36 PM

BTW if they were going to fix things to give Toronto a great player they had the perfect chance in 2005 when they did a lottery behind closed doors for the entire draft order, if they had a conspiracy to give Toronto a superstar they could have given them Crosby.

    • bullwinkle88 - Aug 21, 2014 at 10:52 PM

If that happens then I will have my proof that the lottery is fixed!

      • beergold - Aug 22, 2014 at 8:25 AM

Watch and be amazed bullw the leafs have been a bad joke for too long and isn’t next season some kind of milestone for the team……just sayin.

    Like Pittsburgh, like Buffalo.

    Thanks, Craig Patrick! :-)

*And I forgot…the biggest deal of this and the combine happens to be…these guys will see how Buffalo is with hockey, and when they become free agents at some point…they will remember that and think about what Buffalo is building there.

That is Buffalo’s reason for doing this.
