Rangers win Kevin Hayes sweepstakes

Kevin Hayes is on his way to the Big Apple.

On Tuesday, various outlets (see here and here and here and here) reported that Hayes — the former Boston College standout taken 24th overall by Chicago at the ’10 draft — has agreed to sign with the New York Rangers, ending a long, drawn-out saga in the process.

UPDATE: Rangers make the signing official.

Hayes had consistently balked at signing in Chicago despite the ‘Hawks drafting him out of high school four years ago, ahead of the likes of Evgeny Kuznetsov, Charlie Coyle and Emerson Etem. Instead, he completed a stellar career at BC, then simply allowed time to run out on his draft rights — on Aug. 15, the deadline for the ‘Hawks to sign Hayes passed, making him an unrestricted free agent in the process.

And now he’ll be reunited with one of his former running mates in New York.

Budding Rangers power forward Chris Kreider, who finished 10th in Calder voting last year, spent two years as Hayes’ teammate at BC — the pair were linemates during Hayes’ freshman year and combined to help the Eagles capture the Frozen Four championship in 2012.

The move to New York also makes sense from an opportunity standpoint. Whereas Hayes would’ve had a hard time cracking Chicago’s loaded forward corps, he’ll now look to slot into a Rangers lineup that lost the services of Brad Richards, Benoit Pouliot, Brian Boyle and Derek Dorsett this offseason. While the Rangers did bring in a few veterans on the cheap (Tanner Glass, Lee Stempniak, Matthew Lombardi, Chris Mueller), Hayes should be right in the thick of competition for playing time due to his combination of size — he goes 6-foot-4, 216 pounds — and potential scoring ability. He finished second in the country in points last year, notching 65 in 40 games.

He could have de-registered at any time and start the 30 day clock. Allow that to run out and screw the Hawks out of a compensatory. I think I would have rather seen the Rangers give up a pick a la the MLB system

    • endusersolutions2013 - Aug 20, 2014 at 3:34 PM

Agreed, and that may cause teams to think twice about signing guys in that circumstance. And I’d make it a pick from the same round as well.

  2. lowenni - Aug 20, 2014 at 11:30 AM

Hmm. Not where I expected him to end up, but good for the rangers. Can only wonder what show he’ll put on when he becomes a free agent…

  3. hockey412 - Aug 20, 2014 at 11:37 AM

Ah, well damn. Good for you, NY.

  4. trolltoll11 - Aug 20, 2014 at 11:41 AM

About time we get some good news this off season. Hopefully he lives up to the hype.

  5. rosloe62 - Aug 20, 2014 at 12:27 PM

Ends up working out for both teams.

HAHAHA ANOTHER AHL SIGNING BY THE RAGS – signed, CUPS

Oh wait, this kid was a 1st round draft pick, sorry Cups, bet you wanted him!!

    • jkay1818 - Aug 20, 2014 at 1:46 PM

950003cups is still digging for info on hayes and what nasty comment he can write. Summer camp drops him off at home at 3pm he will be on momentarily.

      • 950003cups - Aug 20, 2014 at 3:27 PM

Digging info? One only needs to look no further than Matt Gilroy. He was the next HUGE thing that amounted to ugotz! This guy won’t take it too well if he gets sent to the AHL. To hold out like that, and not get developed is a sign that he only wants to play where he can get a chance. What happens when he wakes up and sees this ain’t college? That these guys came from all over the globe and were the very best where they played? He’ll crumble like a house of cards. These guys never get past preseason.

Mark my words. If he makes it in the NHL from opening day till january, I’ll never post on a rags article until July 1 2015. If he gets sent down any time between then, I expect every post I type to be met with “950003cups, you are correct as always, and Go Devils!”

GOOD LUCK… You’re gonna need it.

      • 7mantel - Aug 20, 2014 at 8:23 PM

You hit the nail right on the head ! 3:27 I guess he had his milk and cookies first !

      • stepanup - Aug 21, 2014 at 11:10 AM

7mantel, thank you for the good laugh that comment gave me.

Somebody please bring this up again come opening day…I’d do anything to never read this guys comments again lol

@CUPS… Comparing Hayes to Gilroy isn’t quite apples-to-apples, my friend. Gilroy was an undrafted free agent, whereas Hayes was a 1st rounder who never signed and has now become a free agent. Quite the difference, as one’s potential and skill were thought of so highly 4 years ago that a team was willing to take their first on him – while the other was never viewed as a high potential player early on and was picked up once he completed college.

Ultimately, I feel Gilroy was playing his best hockey by his senior year and rode the wave to the tune of a Hobey Baker and National Title, earning a contract in the NHL.

Hayes has always been a talent above his peers, but I guess time will only tell. I’ll be sure to keep you to your promise.

RE: “Oh wait, this kid was a 1st round draft pick, sorry Cups, bet you wanted him!!”

If memory serves me well, and it does, I also remember Dylan McIlrath was also a first round choice. In fact, your beloved Sather picked him over this “phenom”.

      • moarjam - Aug 20, 2014 at 8:12 PM

Is McIlrath a bust now ? I missed that..

  7. chip56 - Aug 20, 2014 at 2:03 PM

Nice – go Rangers. Between him, Kristo, Fast, Bourque, and Lindberg the Rangers are going to have some options on that third line wing with Brassard and Zook.

Though if Hayes does make the leap then I wonder if they might put him on a line with Kreider based on chemistry.

  8. nashernation - Aug 20, 2014 at 3:14 PM

Have to give Sather his props. This makes up for the two first rounders in the St. Louis trade. This kid is a beast. Let’s go Rangers!!!

  9. endusersolutions2013 - Aug 20, 2014 at 3:14 PM

When the Rangers pay a visit to the madhouse, I hope several fans will have a sign up with his # and something to the effect of “Not good enough to make the ‘hawks”

  10. quinner17 - Aug 20, 2014 at 3:20 PM

Who does this d-bag think he is?

    • arrow43050 - Aug 20, 2014 at 3:38 PM

I believe he thinks he’s Kevin Hayes, although I could be wrong.

  11. quinner17 - Aug 20, 2014 at 4:15 PM

@arrow, you seem like a guy who’s probably wrong a lot

I hope this is another Tim Erixon situation where he forced calgary to trade him to the Rangers then the rangers shipped him off to Columbus where he’s struggling to get ice time.

  12. rupp246 - Aug 20, 2014 at 5:19 PM

    Lol jkay!

  13. 34defense2014 - Aug 20, 2014 at 6:56 PM

rupp246: Lol jkay, that was so funny I almost forgot to laugh! Chemistry with Kryer?! lol now that’s funny! Dude they haven’t played together in years lol another pathetic move by the Rags! Well maybe not I guess? He should help out on your a farm team! The real question is which farm team? Because he’s not good enough to play in Hartford!

    • 950003cups - Aug 20, 2014 at 7:07 PM

They haven’t played together in the rangers system either. rags fans are the dumbest of the dumb. These are the same turds that chose Messier over Leetch not knowing that Leetch was the Conn Smythe winner in that 1994 postseason, and he too went to the HHOF. No wonder why Sather makes these moves. He doesn’t have to win, he just has to tell them the fans they won. It’s not like 70% of their “fan base” watches any hockey anyway. But they sure have a boatload of fans. Too bad they don’t watch the game.

      • moarjam - Aug 20, 2014 at 8:26 PM

Haha what the hell are you two talking about?

      • lightning79 - Aug 21, 2014 at 5:50 PM

I know you like to bust Rangers fans balls, So I’m going to help you a little….Google: Kevin Hayes poopgate LOL I have a feeling when he got suspended for taking a dump in a stairwell, Chicago must’ve punished him and he didn’t like it very much.

  14. mpops86 - Aug 20, 2014 at 7:54 PM

    The BC pipeline srtrikes again.

  15. 7mantel - Aug 20, 2014 at 8:26 PM

Now he answers to his alter ego ! What a loser !

  16. blackhawks2010 - Aug 20, 2014 at 10:11 PM

Hooray! The Hayes sweepstakes! Must be a slow sports day. This guy is a utility player who couldn’t crack the Hawks roster, hence why he didn’t want to sign with us and spend his next 2 years in Rockford.

Move along, nothing to see here….

He might have some talent, but he appears to be an entitled spoiled little punk.
