EA Sports has unveiled its top 50 player rankings for NHL 15 and this time it wasn’t even close: Sidney Crosby had a 96 rating, which was three points higher than his closest competition.

That’s a stark change from NHL 14 when Crosby and Pavel Datsyuk were tied at 95. Datsyuk, who was limited to 45 games in 2013-14, dropped to sixth on the list and now has a 93 rating.

After Crosby, the top five are Steven Stamkos, Jonathan Toews, Alex Ovechkin, and Shea Weber.

Zdeno Chara was rated as the top defenseman a year ago, but the 37-year-old has slipped from a 94 rating to 91 and now ranks 20th overall. Weber also pulled away from his former teammate Ryan Suter. The Minnesota Wild defenseman retained his 92 rating, but dropped from ninth on the list in 2013-14 (just one rank below Weber’s position last season) to 15th this time around.

At seventh overall, the Rangers’ Henrik Lundqvist is the top goaltender on the list, although the Kings’ Jonathan Quick was slotted just below him.

Finally, it’s worth noting that the only team with two players on the top-10 list was Anaheim as Ryan Getzlaf and Corey Perry took the ninth and 10th spots respectively.

You can view the full list here. NHL 15 is scheduled to come out on Sept. 9.

I guess we can finally put all that Crosby/Toews talk to rest now that these official rankings are out.

Yeah, because a video game is the final arbiter. Just like every team that looks like crap in preseason should just start getting ready for the draft.

That whoosing sound is the sarcasm, flying over your head.

    • urallstupid - Aug 10, 2014 at 9:13 PM

how is malkin not top 10?

  2. charastein - Aug 10, 2014 at 10:15 AM

Kesler rated higher than Kane? Kessel too?
EA SPORTS what are you smoking over there?

Charastein is disappointed with his 91 rating. Chara will smash this year and prove all the naysayers wrong.

EA is just a terrible company. Bad for the gaming industry.Monopolizing breeds laziness, which is what happens to all of EA’s games. SLIGHT improvements from year-to-year.

Right on!! Can some one please explain to me why, i can’t play with my brother on the same team online, on two different systems without having to go through online team play. Where i run into 12yr wanting to play goalie every damn time.
It just doesn’t make any sense to me. Same with the power rankings, but i guess they go off the Corsi system.

While I agree, it’s not EA’s fault that they have no competition. There is no trademark or copyright on making NHL video games. They have no competition, so they have no reason to step up their game year to year. If, lets say, 2k decides to make an NHL game, that would change things, and having 2k and EA go head to head would most likely result in the greatest hockey video games to date.

EA paid for the exclusive rights years ago. We all know people won’t play generic games when it comes to national sports.

    • xaile94 - Aug 10, 2014 at 6:36 PM

I believe the overall ratings are relative to the type of player (playmaker, sniper, 2-way forward, etc…). while I don’t necessarily agree that Kessler is a better power forward than Kane is a playmaker, it may help explain what happens with some of these ratings.

    Mcfaddens,

    Its called sarcasm. Learn it.

  4. rushledger - Aug 10, 2014 at 10:49 AM

Some of these in the middle are screwy. Sid did have 17 points more than the next guy, 3 points doesn’t seem to high when you think about that.

  5. krishavy3 - Aug 10, 2014 at 11:07 AM

I’m still trying to fathom how Shea Weber is so much better than Ryan Suter. Jesus, EA.

    • wutangwild - Aug 10, 2014 at 1:55 PM

One overall point doesn’t constitute “so much better”, but Weber still is better imo.

  6. live4hockey - Aug 10, 2014 at 11:26 AM

How did they break ties in the rankings? 9-15 are all 92’s…

    • Ryan Dadoun - Aug 10, 2014 at 11:31 AM

My guess is that these ratings aren’t actually identical. There are a lot of different categories that are factored in to come up with the ratings and at the end of the day, they probably round everyone to the nearest whole number to make it look clean. So Stamkos’ real rating might be something like 93.42732 while Toews is 93.40222.

EA NHL is a joke…they never have it right. So many guys missing from the game, even first round picks like Joel Armia.

There’s a group of kids online who re-do the NHL rosters every year, and it’s awesome. It’s better than EA’s work.

They’d rather spend time on stupid cards or whatever it is, than having legit rosters.

  8. djshnooks - Aug 10, 2014 at 12:09 PM

Not to mention you can take someone like Nathan Gerbe and out Chara through the glass. With the rosters those kids make, you cannot do that at all.

  9. mattryannolan - Aug 10, 2014 at 12:17 PM

I can’t believe Tyler Seguin doesn’t crack the top 50….

  10. areaman714 - Aug 10, 2014 at 1:30 PM

The twins, as always, are inseparable . . .

  11. areaman714 - Aug 10, 2014 at 1:35 PM

    Relax folks . . . its only a game.

  12. andyisfat - Aug 10, 2014 at 1:49 PM

Oh, I thought these were the biggest pu ssy rankings.

    • wutangwild - Aug 10, 2014 at 2:47 PM

      Sunday keyboard warrior. Classic.

  13. hauger88 - Aug 10, 2014 at 5:58 PM

Djshnooks…I believe they have to play a game or a certain number to be eligible. Something with being an official member of the players association.

  14. tdrusher225 - Aug 11, 2014 at 12:20 AM

Guys don’t get too worked up about this. These guys change the ratings year to year anyway just take it for what it is.

  15. scout202sport - Aug 11, 2014 at 8:26 AM

Not having Kopitar in the top 10 is a crime! Jeff Carter should definitely be in the top 25 as well. GO KINGS! IS IT OCTOBER YET??

  16. lilgurgi - Aug 11, 2014 at 12:51 PM

Could care less about rankings other than the fact that when I smash Crosby into the wall I’ll do it knowing they ranked him #1. Go Flyers!!!
