Alfie to resume skating; if he returns, it’s Detroit or nothing

Aug 5, 2014, 8:23 PM EDT

Looks as though the Red Wings will learn of Daniel Alfredsson‘s future in the coming weeks. From the IIHF’s Szymon Szemberg:

Alfredsson, 41, has been non-committal about returning to Detroit following an up-and-down 2013-14 campaign — his first with the Wings after controversially leaving Ottawa last summer. The Swedish veteran produced well last year, scoring 18 goals and 49 points in 68 games, but missed extensive time with groin and back problems, the latter sidelining him for the final two games of Detroit’s opening-round playoff loss to Boston.

It’s that wonky back that might keep Alfredsson from returning to play this coming season. That said, there’s also the money issue — he played last year on a $5.5 million deal and, according to CapGeek, the club has around $5M in space available, with RFA d-man Danny DeKeyser still unsigned.

Alfie come back… any kind of fool could see,
There was something… in every goal about you,
Alfie come back… you can be good Red Wing
They were wrong… and we just can’t live without you

Who gives a crap! Go ahead and wait for an injury prone, old man to make up his mind. Its official, desperate times in Motown. But IF he returns it will be only for the wings. As if anyone else would take him. Too funny!

Considering that the Wings have nothing but lefties filling out the top-8 on their depth chart of defensemen, yeah they kinda need Alfie (for the PP if nothing else)

because lefties cant score on the PP right ?

because it’s not like that was a major reason for Holland making a play for him in the first place, right?

    Lol that’s also a way of saying – It’s nothing, I’m done..

He’ll play one more year in Sweden

Every time I hear “back problems,” I think of Bossy and Lemieux. At least Mario lasted a while and Alfie is 41; Bossy retired at age 30.

Last season, the guy produce very well… a point most of you have completely ignored.

Glad to have him back for one more.

Thank you for last year Alfie but the wings need to move on from the older guys and give players like Tatar, Nyquizt, Jurco and hopefully Mantha a true shot to play legit minutes
