Cory Sarich hospitalized following cycling accident, expects ‘full recovery’

Jul 23, 2014, 7:53 PM EDT

Unrestricted free agent defenseman Cory Sarich remains hospitalized in the Calgary area following an accident in which he was struck by a car while cycling on Monday, but it doesn’t appear as if he’s suffered any life-threatening injuries.

The report indicates that Sarich suffered multiple broken vertebrae and also has a severe case of road rash from the incident. Here are a few more details regarding the accident:

The good news is that Sarich, 35, was able to provide an optimistic update about his condition on Twitter:

Sarich spent the 2013-14 season with the Colorado Avalanche. He also played with the Tampa Bay Lightning for seven seasons (1999-2000 to 2006-07) and the Calgary Flames for six (2007-08 to 2012-13). The Flames and Avalanche were among those who sent Sarich their best wishes as of Wednesday.

There’s no timetable regarding when (or if) he’ll be able to return to NHL action as of this time.

“It’s been a rough couple of days and I’m grateful for the support I’ve been receiving from the medical team here and from family and friends,” Sarich said, according to NHL.com. “My wife, Reagan, and I appreciate all of the kind words and encouragement.”

Scary stuff, hope he’s ok. I’m an avid cyclist and it’s always a bummer to see things like this. If only cyclists and drivers could live in harmony. Obviously accidents happen, but the the amount of animosity is unreal (from both sides)

There there is more to it than simple anomosity. Actually there is a good chance it was more related to a distracted driver – talking to someone in the car, cell phone/texting, changing a CD…

let’s not jump to conclusions or anything… unless you are monk/ columbo and deduced the guilty party already, but even he had to ask a few questions…

I’m really surprised at the lack of the “STAY OFF THE ROAD!” a-holes on this post. Share the road. Look for bikes and motorcycles. Neither of them is legally allowed to use the sidewalk in most places, so keep that in mind.

I wonder if he was wearing his Lance Armstrong cycling suit with the ads on it? He’s lucky he escaped a preventable death! Stay off the road, go to the mountains of France if you want to do this crap.

Correct me if I am wrong, but most people prefer using bicycles for getting to point A to point B. Even if you were getting paid loads of money to buy a mercedes benz.

I personally like to do this to keep me in shape…

Whatever the case was, we always hope for a speedy recovery for accidents like this.
