The Anaheim Ducks have signed defenseman Sami Vatanen to a two-year contract, the club announced today.

From the press release:

Vatanen, 23 (6/3/91), scored 6-15=21 points with a +9 rating and 22 PIM in 48 games with the Ducks last season. Among rookie NHL defensemen, Vatanen ranked tied for fifth in goals, fourth in points-per-game (.44) and sixth in plus/minus. On Oct. 10, 2013 vs. the New York Rangers, he set a franchise rookie record and tied the overall club record with a +5 rating in a 6-0 win. The 5-10, 183-pound defenseman made his Stanley Cup Playoff debut in 2014, picking up his first career postseason assist in five games.

The one-way deal is reportedly worth $1.25 million in the first year and $1.275 million in the second.

I’m spending too much time in Blog comment sections because I read that headline as “Ducks sign d-bag Vatanen to two-year deal”.

(No offense to Vatanen, I’m sure he’s kind to small animals, patient with children and supports his parents).

      Yeah that happens, lol

I’m digging this Anaheim blue line. With Vatanen, Lindholm, Fowler and that other Swede they just drafted, they’re gonna have the smoothest blue line in the league for years. Just need some muscle back there. Anaheims doing all they can to steal the drafting crown from Det, and id say they’re getting pretty close

Ducks have been drafting great but to say they are stealing the drafting crown…

      PLAYER YR RD Pick#
      Datsyuk 98′ 6 171
      Zetterburg 99′ 7 210
      Ericsson 02′ 9 291
      Franzen 04′ 3 97
      Nyquist 08′ 4 121
      Tatar 09′ 2 60
      Mrazek 10′ 5 141

Mrazek?? Lol, he hasn’t even played yet, and Howard won’t be letting that happen anytime soon.
Tatar a steal in the 2nd round? Nyquist is right where he should be.

After Ericsson, the steals fall off bud, just like the Wings will be, unfortunately.

The Ducks are making awesome draft choices on D, but really lack size. They need bulk and bad, but great blue line for sure

Somewhere in wild fantasyland, an Ericsson for Vatanen swap would happen. Ericsson has your size and plays with a pinch of grit (for a Detroit Swede…)
