Ex-NHLer Recchi joins Penguins as player development coach

The Pittsburgh Penguins continued to reshape their coaching staff by hiring former NHL forward Mark Recchi to serve as the player development coach.

Recchi was originally drafted by the Penguins in 1988, but he was traded to the Philadelphia Flyers in 1992. He rejoined the Penguins as a free agent in July 2004, but only played in 63 games with Pittsburgh before they traded him again, this time to Carolina. Despite that, he signed with Pittsburgh for a third stint that started with the 2006-07 campaign. The Penguins held onto Recchi for a little over a season before they lost him on waivers.

He ended up playing in 1,652 career games with seven different teams and won the Stanley Cup in 1991 with Pittsburgh, 2006 with Carolina, and then 2011 with the Boston Bruins. He chose to hang up his skates immediately following his third championship.

As an added bit of trivia, Recchi assisted on both Sidney Crosby and Evgeni Malkin‘s first goals.

Since retiring, he has served as a senior advisor with the Dallas Stars.
