Numerous jobs up for grabs in Devils camp

Jul 15, 2014, 9:00 AM EDT

Eric Gelinas, Peter Harrold, Jon Merrill AP

There may be more than a few jobs up for grabs during training camp with the New Jersey Devils and the team’s slew of prospects know they’ll have a shot to cash in.

One area that will see a lot of competition is defense. The Devils lost Anton Volchenkov to a buyout and Mark Fayne to Edmonton in free agency. That means guys like Eric Gelinas, Adam Larsson, and Jon Merrill will likely graduate to the big leagues full-time.

As Devils coach Peter DeBoer told Mike Morreale of NHL.com, they need guys to show they’re ready to make the jump.

“I think the organization sets the table with opportunity, and over my time as coach the one thing I’ve seen is opportunity for players to come in and play,” said DeBoer. “Some of the young players grabbed it and ran with it, like Jon Merrill and Adam Henrique (in 2010-11), and some haven’t yet. We need a few of these guys to do that this year.”

With a couple of guys gone on the blue line and possible openings at forward, the Devils want guys to be pushing to get in the lineup and force DeBoer to make tough decisions.

Andy Greene, Bryce Salvador, Marek Zidlicky, and Peter Harrold make up the veteran portion of the defense for the Devils so youth will need to be king. After how Merrill and Gelinas played for portions of last season, things are looking up.

Hard to believe Larsson wouldn’t be NHL ready yet.

    • mb30forlife - Jul 15, 2014 at 11:09 AM

He better be otherwise we will lose him. He was about to sign in a Swedish league because Doboer won’t give him the minutes he wants. So they signed him for a 1 year and hopefully the coach plays him and Larsson steps up.

    • plr07670 - Jul 15, 2014 at 3:47 PM

I would’ve loved to see him and our 30th overall pick get traded to Edmonton for Nail Yakupov at the draft. Then again, I don’t think he was signed for next season at that time

      • downwithbettman - Jul 15, 2014 at 10:17 PM

?????…. Do you know what you’re talking about, Larsson is actually a good defenseman it just so happens that DeBoer is an idiot and won’t give him playing time. As for Yakupov, why the hell do the Devils need another lazy Russian that wants to go back to Russia?? And as for the 30th overall pick, we couldn’t trade it.

        Facepalm.

      • 950003cups - Jul 15, 2014 at 10:48 PM

Regarding Larsson. I think he’s one of the most talented players on our team. What he’s missing is that professional NHL hunger. He almost has that “I know what I’m doing” sort of swagger. He needs to have that “I wanna do whatever it takes” attitude on order to bring that talent to fruition. This is the NHL. They’ll squash you in 3 years no matter how good you are unless you realize that you’re starting at the bottom again. You have to be willing to give it all. That’s what gives Merrill an advantage. He broke his face in one shift and wanted to come back out in minutes. Larsson needs to toughen up. They know what they’re doing with him. I think by now he realizes that he needs to prove himself on NHL ice and not on his past Swesish Elite Leage reputation.

Henrique’s breakout season was 2011-2012. Also, according to Tom Gulitti, Damon Severson (as well as Steve Santini) could be battling for a job on the blue line too. The Devils problem obviously isn’t their defense.

    • mb30forlife - Jul 15, 2014 at 11:12 AM

Henrique is like our Danny Briere. He is kinda quiet for the most part but comes up huge in big games. I would like to see more consistency out of him and Zajac this season. Can’t really depend on Jagr, Elias and Zidlicky all season for goals and points. Younger guys have to step it up!

    • cliffatola - Jul 16, 2014 at 1:36 AM

Did Santini withdraw from school ?

  3. doknyc - Jul 15, 2014 at 9:53 AM

      • 950003cups - Jul 15, 2014 at 11:27 AM

Go easy on “the King” don’t you think he has it bad enough? He’s stuck on a team with Douche Nash for the next eight years. LOLOL. Then look at the dorks that he has to see cheering. Oh wait, he can’t see his fans. They’re at the top row cause all the bottom bowl seats are all corporate freebees. All they do is waive to the camera. LOLOL.

    • 7mantel - Jul 15, 2014 at 10:35 AM

not even smart enough to reply with his original tag ! lmao

      • doknyc - Jul 15, 2014 at 11:00 AM

        7mantel,

he has five names now, and like his imaginary friends, they all agree with him…

    • 950003cups - Jul 15, 2014 at 11:18 AM

You’re obsessed with this masturbation thing. You must really miss your idol, Avery. Rags fans make us all laugh! Not only are they perennial losers, they talk as if they’re in the midst of a dynasty. They lost half their entire young core of players and the other half is in arbitration. They have nothing left in their AHL, and are stuck with only older ayers that they traded 2 1st rounders for, so kiss any prospects goodbye.

Read the article. Devils have begun to bare the fruits of the suffering of the prior two years, your team is going back to oblivion.

Not to worry! Not. To. Worry. YOU HAVE MORE FANS!
      Bwahaha !!!!

    • hennnrikkk - Jul 15, 2014 at 11:56 AM

hey dork.. guess what? you got OWNED.
Lose York Smurfs – the only nhl team to have its own police precinct built into the arena..
tells you everything you need to know about the fans and the team. trollolololololol
Lose York Smurfs – the most unsuccessful original 6 franchise in NHL history. trollololololol
Lose York Smurfs – 1 cup since WWII – HAHAHAHAHAHAHA
my god its too easy trolling this kid

  4. bayafan - Jul 15, 2014 at 10:09 AM

No mention that three of Brodeur’s sons are in the rookie camp

    • mb30forlife - Jul 15, 2014 at 11:14 AM

Yeah…. that is supposed to be an insult? Good one…. Let us know next time avery is on dancing with the stars since he cant cut it on the real ice.

      • mb30forlife - Jul 15, 2014 at 11:16 AM

What is wrong with 3 brodeurs??? Theres a good chance one will make it to the NHL, two of them goalies and the one i think has the most potential is William the forward. Always hard to fill your fathers shoes in terms of sports. I would like to see what the one that went in the other direction can do

      • 950003cups - Jul 15, 2014 at 2:53 PM

Yeah, whats wrong with 3 Brodeurs? Hansens had 3 on a team and that worked out for the Charleston Cheifs

  5. phtjoey - Jul 15, 2014 at 11:27 AM

Q: Will Martin Brodeur find a job in NJ if no one else signs him? Hmmm! Probably not.

    • 950003cups - Jul 15, 2014 at 11:43 AM

Probably not on the ice. Brodeur himself agreed that he needs to open up the goaltender slot so the team can build. But if there’s an injury to Schneider……

      That’ll be interesting.

    • mb30forlife - Jul 15, 2014 at 12:52 PM

Some one will sign Marty…. There is no way he doesn’t get signed. I think Pittsburgh or Toronto will be the ones. I thought Chicago but they are over cap and cant afford anyone else. They are looking to trade Odyua for picks. Maybe even Minnesota, Nashville or even Phoenix/Arizona i can see potentially signing Brodeur. All have a little bit of cap and cant depend on back ups and or have issues with the starter being inconsistent or injured.

    • hennnrikkk - Jul 15, 2014 at 12:30 PM

dorknyc – i kinda feel bad for how much ive been trolling you since you have no idea or clue as to how rediculous you look. Im going to take a step back and thank you. thank you for taking your time during the day to support the devils articles instead of actually supporting you own team that is in severe distress. We all want to thank you for the continued support and its ok to be jealous. Id be jealous too if my team blew as much as the smurfs. all your players are jumping ship as expected, to play for teams that are contenders. at least you have rick trash locked up and lawn jockey (stlouis) overpaid at 5+million. you guys are all set! LMFAO TROLLOLOLOLOLOLOLOL my god i cant take it anymore its just too easy. OWNED.. in fact – PWNED!

      • 950003cups - Jul 15, 2014 at 12:55 PM

        It’s not Rick Trash.
        It’s Dick Rash.

  7. devilsmetsgiants - Jul 15, 2014 at 1:14 PM

Michael Ryder will have a better season. Ryane Clowe will have a full season and play like he can. The team will be at least .500 in shootouts. These reasonable happenstances will be all that the Devils need to finish ahead of the Rangers this upcoming season.

  8. 34defense2014 - Jul 15, 2014 at 2:33 PM

doknyc:: must be extremely insecure with his, hers sexuality?! He, she keeps making references about basements? Self-Masturbation? And Mom’s?? Must be a Rag fan??

    • 950003cups - Jul 15, 2014 at 7:39 PM

No his or hers. It’s a boy who seems to have vast visions of
      A) his mom
      B) basements
      C) meatloaf
      D) masturbation

I’m guessing he’s seen a lot of his mom in his basement taking in the plumbers meatloaf while he watched and masturbated.

  9. plr07670 - Jul 15, 2014 at 3:44 PM

As a Devils fan, I would like to state that I am straight up embarassed by some of the comments other members of our fanbase have made on this article and on the article recently posted about Rick Nash. I apologize for these immature comments and please don’t think they are reflective of how members of our fanbase act

    • 950003cups - Jul 15, 2014 at 3:57 PM

Oh thank you for leading us! For without fans such as you, what would we do? Who would then be our becon of shining light? It is you! You are our leader! Our big toe. For without you, our beloved franchise we yearn for each year would be in ruins.

A plague upon the houses of those immoral posters who dare to embarrass plr7670!!

      Tis a sin!

With devil fans like you, who needs rag fans?

    • 950003cups - Jul 15, 2014 at 10:53 PM

Also, on top of this blog you said you wanted to trade Larsson and our 30th pick for Yakupov. There’s a ton of flaws showing you’re not really a fan yet.

      A) that 30th pick couldn’t be traded as per the NHL. It wasn’t a secret. It was pretty much widely known.

      B) Yakupov is a showboater.

      C) Larsson is one of the best talents we have who needs to develop.
