The Red Wings have replaced one of the two assistant coaches they’ve lost this offseason to other organizations. Tony Granato has joined Mike Babcock’s staff, according to TSN’s Darren Dreger.

Granato fills half the hole left by Bill Peters (Carolina’s new head coach) and Tom Renney (reportedly to be named president of Hockey Canada tomorrow).

A former head coach of the Colorado Avalanche, Granato was most recently let go as an assistant in Pittsburgh, where he’d been on Dan Bylma’s staff since 2009.

The Wings are expected to hire another assistant before the start of next season.

“Mike has done a fantastic job finding assistant coaches,” Wings general manager Ken Holland said, per MLive. “I sign off on his decision. Three guys he found (Todd McLellan, Paul MacLean and Peters) turned out to be NHL coaches.”
