The Boston Bruins have come to terms with defenseman Matt Bartkowski on a one-year, $1.25 million contract, according to Sportsnet’s Elliotte Friedman.

The deal means arbitration won’t be necessary for the 26-year-old, who had no goals and 18 assists in 64 games for the B’s in 2013-14.

Among the restricted free agents general manager Peter Chiarelli still needs to sign are Torey Krug and Reilly Smith, with minimal cap space to do it.

Sign and trade. That’s what I’m hoping for anyways.

trade for what, a draft pick? there’s no cap room to trade for a player

      • thesportsjudge - Jul 14, 2014 at 12:42 PM

Could be a package deal with a vet like Kelly.

Yes, that’s how you usually clear cap space. They will most likely trade Boychuck to clear his hit.

Trade Bart for a draft pick. Bruins dont need to clear Boychuk’s hit. If they trade Mcquaid or Bart that will leave them with just enough to sign Smith and Krug to bridge or “show me” contracts with modest raises from their 2013-2014 salaries as well as leave them enough to carry two entry level deals for guys like Spooner and Fraser.

That leaves them $4.4M to sign four players after Savard’s is put on LTIR.

You’d have to think Caron and Florek are due for minimal contracts of probably just less than $1M each (800k?). Krug, on the other hand, deserves quite a bit more ($3M?) and would also leave give them 8 d-men.

Either they send someone down or a trade is imminent.

I think Krug will get effed on a one year deal this year, but get PAID next year.

      • jpelle82 - Jul 14, 2014 at 4:40 PM

PAID by some other team next year if that’s the case……

      • thesportsjudge - Jul 14, 2014 at 4:44 PM

Absolute possibility. I think PC is trying to explain that he will get paid very well, just, next year.

    • topshelf37 - Jul 14, 2014 at 1:28 PM

I love Kruggy, and I think he has a bright future, but he is nowhere near a $3M man right now. He will be, but not yet.

Even 800k for Caron seems too high. Time for him to move on.

      • drewsylvania - Jul 14, 2014 at 1:49 PM

It’s funny though. Caron is three years YOUNGER than Bartkowski. I had no idea. Almost better to let both guys walk. But then, you can never have too many d-men in the playoffs. And the cap hit for Bartkowski is small.

Bruins are going to have to trade somebody. It may come down to what Boychuk wants as a UFA. Don’t want to see him go, but the only other option that would clear a lot of room is Sides, and do we really want them to prioritize Boychuk over Sides? I dunno.

Then again, maybe they pull off a shocker and trade Krejci–he’s a UFA next year, too, and is likely to command significantly more dough than Boychuk.

        Spooner would take his place.

Hmm. Hate losing Krejci but that might be the best idea. Trade Krejci for a good haul, use the space to sign Krug & Smith, then promote Spooner.

Krug will only get a very small bump. He has no leverage because he’s not eligible to sign an offer sheet. Neither is Smith.

But the Bruins need to be in compliance WITH Savard’s cap hit on the books before they can put him on LTIR. Boychuk is probably gone, which sucks.

The Bruins are just signing guys to contracts as they normally would. It doesn’t mean they won’t be made available later on.

Correct about Krug & Smith, but there is so little cap space.

Other teams might balk at giving Bartkowski 1.25…..Something has to give on the “D”….I would still like to see them get rid of Lucic….not nearly worth 5.5m…made some good passes this year but for the money and as a power forward he should be controlling every game he is in….and he only does that about 5-10 times a year….

  5. joeman26 - Jul 14, 2014 at 4:52 PM

now they need to package him and Marchant for E Kane

    • drewsylvania - Jul 14, 2014 at 6:07 PM

      You misspelled “Marchmont”.

I see what you did there.
