About two weeks ago, PHT asked which of the 30 NHL teams were the biggest winners and losers of the 2014 NHL Draft.

Naturally, it’s difficult to gauge how well a team fared in the first season or two after a draft, let alone in the same weekend … but some might find it enjoyable. Let’s take a look at the results and see if there’s a consensus (or if popular and/or disliked teams skewed the results).

For the sake of convenience, the top and bottom five from each category are listed. For all 30 teams’ results, click here.

Biggest winners top and bottom five (5,987 total votes):

1. Buffalo – 23.7 percent (1,419 votes)
2. Islanders – 7.75 percent (464)
3. Vancouver – 6.53 percent (391)
4. Detroit – 4.79 percent (287)
5. Florida – 4.64 percent (278)

26. New Jersey – 1.12 percent (67)
27. Dallas – 1.1 percent (66)
28. Colorado – 1.02 percent (61)
29. Carolina – .79 (47)
30. Ottawa – “0” (4)

Biggest losers top and bottom five (3,712 total votes):

1. Ottawa – 15.54 percent (577)
2. Pittsburgh – 10.29 percent (382)
3. Rangers – 8.3 percent (308)
4. Toronto – 7.65 percent (284)
5. Vancouver – 5.6 percent (208)

26. Minnesota – .89 percent (33)
27. Tampa Bay – .86 percent (32)
28. Dallas – .75 percent (28)
29. Nashville – .65 percent (24)
30. Columbus – .57 percent (21)

Some notes: The most telling thing might be that the distaste for Ottawa’s draft seemed clear: they received the fewest winner votes and the most loser voters. Biggest winner Buffalo received 2.9 percent (89 votes) of the loser votes. Dallas was in the bottom five of both polls (feel free to draw whatever conclusions you’d like from that).

The Sabres command such an impressive majority of the votes that it seems reasonable to deem them the “PHT voters’ choice.” One can only hope that people gave the Sabres bonus points for the uncanny resemblance between Brendan Lemieux and Sam Reinhart (pictured).

This may possibly be the most worthless article you guys have done. :)

    • kaptaanamerica - Jul 13, 2014 at 11:28 PM

All the scum suckers voted Vancouver as losing, when they were in fact big winners at the draft with their moves.

      1. Offloading alleged locker room cancer, and alleged guy who was rooting a teammates significant other, onto Anaheim. Hope the players over there don’t introduce Kesler to their partners or invite him over to the house… never know if he’ll start creeping…

      2. picking future power forward Virtanen (local boy) and McCaan (who dropped multiple spots based on non-ice related reasons) in the first round.

      3. Getting an NHL ready center who centred Toffoli and Pearson in Manchester, Vey from L.A. for a 2nd rounder…

      4. picking the top goalchie prospect, Demcko (sp?) who is projected to be a starter

      5. getting the Russian Chara (6’9″ Tree-am-kin) whose playing in the K and will be ready for NHL in 2 seasons or less…

Canucks did well for themselves right there, haterz gonna hate.

    • valoisvipers - Jul 14, 2014 at 9:33 AM

Don’t fault O’B for the article after all it is based on what PHT posters thought.
      Proof that trolls don’t contribute.

        country music bites ass

  3. cantescapekarma - Jul 14, 2014 at 12:07 AM

Well, it’s nice to see Buffalo listed as winners of something for a change…

But like already stated in the article, we won’t know who won and lost this draft until years from now.
It’s also interesting that everyone seems to think Ottawa’s first draft without Tim Murray (in recent history) was very poor. Seeing as many people have praised Ottawa’s drafting in these last few years (and are now praising Buffalo’s draft), it really speaks highly of Tim Murray, at least in my opinion.

    • buddysguys - Jul 14, 2014 at 12:28 PM

Tim Murray is not impressed with your comment.

  4. bcisleman - Jul 14, 2014 at 12:14 AM

Just getting two elite top 6s in Dal colle and Ho Sang made this draft a big win for the Isles but, if this video reflects his true abilities, Isles may also have gotten a steal w/ Ilya Sorokin in the 3rd round.

    • kaptaanamerica - Jul 14, 2014 at 1:05 AM

I personally like what the Isles are doing… hopefully they start beating on their own division in a short while and bring back the 80’s champions to the organization…

      • lordfletcher - Jul 14, 2014 at 1:51 AM

We won’t know on any of these prospects for one to four years from now .. To say anyone won or lost is just plain laughable.

Yes, some teams looked like they did great on paper but we just don’t know yet.

      • dueman - Jul 14, 2014 at 2:10 AM

Exactly Fletch, this is nothing more than a homer poll! It’s laughable to think that anyone can gauge how well a team has done in the draft until probably four years from now, and even then there may be some late bloomers. If you want proof about the homers, just read some of the comments…lol

      • 19inarow - Jul 14, 2014 at 3:36 AM

You really do like to piss people off. :P

      • bullwinkle88 - Jul 14, 2014 at 4:30 AM

Dueman – if you think this is a homer’s poll, do you really believe there are that many Sabre fans out there? Especially compared to the Big Boys…Rangers, Blackhawks, Flyers, etc.?

Certainly it’s just opinion at this point, but you’re not going to convince me that this is a homer’s poll.

      • dueman - Jul 14, 2014 at 8:28 AM

bullwinkle88 – You’re a Buffalo fan, so of course you’re going to love the fact that Buffalo (according to this poll) is the clear winner, which only serves to prove my point. Not a single player drafted has played a single game of professional hockey (obviously), so therefore, there is not a single shred of evidence as to which team drafted the best players on draft day. Every year there are players that were drafted deep in the draft that end up being a lot better than anybody expected, and also every year there are players that are drafted very high in the draft that end up being busts. Were there people that put some thought into their vote? Of course there were, but at the same time I guarantee that there were a lot of homers out there that voted for the team they like as the winner, and the team that they don’t like as the loser. If you want real proof, just look at Vancouver’s results…3rd in the biggest winner category, and yet they were also 5th in the biggest loser category. There was definitely some homer voting going on there. As far as Buffalo goes…with the number of picks they had/have in this past draft, as well as the next couple, they are obviously going to get some good players, but as far as this poll goes, well let’s just say that you have been on this site long enough, and have seen enough of the silly a$$ comments, to know that this poll means absolutely nothing…

    • 19inarow - Jul 14, 2014 at 3:39 AM

Nice, but Poulin’s made some of those saves, too.

      • bullwinkle88 - Jul 14, 2014 at 7:47 PM

dueman – I’m not contesting the veracity of the poll. That’s a separate issue. My point still stands, I doubt very much if homer votes swayed this result in Buffalo’s favor. There just ain’t that many of us!

  5. slaugin - Jul 14, 2014 at 6:45 AM

Um yes there are that many Sabre/hockey fans in Buf… They had the best TV Rating by market for the Semifinals and Finals. That is saying a lot about a city that saw their team in the basement front start to finish. Signed… Boston fan

    • bullwinkle88 - Jul 14, 2014 at 7:57 AM

Hockey is number one in Buffalo. The numbers prove that. But in terms of numbers, the larger cities beat us easily. TV viewership is judged by percentage, not total numbers.

This poll is judged by total numbers, so no, there are not that many Sabre fans out there compared to other cities. We just care more.

  6. slaugin - Jul 14, 2014 at 6:58 AM

The Buffalo area had more households watching the Stanley Cup than both L.A. And N.Y. Crazy right??

    • bullwinkle88 - Jul 14, 2014 at 7:54 AM

Wrong. Buffalo had (and always has) the greatest percentage of viewers, but not the greatest number. Remember, Buffalo’s population is only 400,000.

      • timmyp716 - Jul 14, 2014 at 10:53 AM

Actually the population is only around 260,000-270,000

  7. jacketsfan7 - Jul 14, 2014 at 7:20 AM

Of course CBJ would be voted last, we barely did anything but lose 3 players lol

  8. mb30forlife - Jul 14, 2014 at 8:29 AM

All of these ratings are based off of “right now”…. Whose to say buffalo will have the best players out of this draft down the line? Players get injured, lazy and or just never pick things up. Also, there are always those surprise players that come out of no where and surprise everyone. As a Devils fan I’am happy to see they were rated on the upper hand but only time will tell.. I would bet that teams like LA, CHI, and BOS will have great players no one knew about come out of this draft.

Also…. Who ever wrote this list had mix feelings about vancouver. They are in best top 5 and worst top 5. and Florida should be higher for top 5 since they have the only guy that will have an immediate impact on their team and play next season.

  9. timmyp716 - Jul 14, 2014 at 10:58 AM

can we get a poll of who won the 2011 draft or 2012? those would be much easier to answer and wouldn’t be speculation

  10. zinger99 - Jul 14, 2014 at 5:08 PM

Sabres have been doing cartwheels over their drafts for years. And yeah, country music is as simple as the people who listen to it.

  11. w3bstur - Jul 14, 2014 at 11:02 PM

Would someone like to offer a fair and detailed opinion of how the Coyotes did in the draft and how do you think the upcoming seasons will be? (With all hockey-in-the-desert jokes aside ;) )

  12. kane987245 - Jul 15, 2014 at 9:43 AM

In shocking news a NJD team has has the crap kicked out of them from all sides and had little draft picks did not do much with this years draft! I suppose it could be worse, we could have just thrown all the picks away.

  13. djshnooks - Jul 15, 2014 at 12:48 PM

All this moaning…it’s clear Buffalo won the draft. They ended up with Lemiuex and Cornel who were both rated 1st rounders.

Reinhart is a stud…and even Karabacek and Olofsson have a ton of skill.

But as for fans…you really have no clue. You must be rather young, like I was explaining to my nephews yesterday…there was a time from 1997-2007 where the Sabres were the most dominant team in hockey. They were also dubbed “The hardest working team in hockey.” Everyone fell in love with them, first under Nolan and again under Ruff. They were getting fans all around the world, especially when Hasek played in the Olympics and won gold. They had a group of kids everyone followed in Rochester when they won the Calder Cup. They were one I the hottest teams in all of sports…people adored them.

This is why after finishing the year in dead last, we had amazing viewer ratings.

We are the reason why you have a “Winter Classic” now, that was Buffalo’s idea.

We are the reason they’re moving the combine from Toronto to Buffalo.

That’s why our area had the most representatives on the Olympic squad.

You don’t realize how big hockey is here.

Union, NCAA champ is from Upstate, NY.

This is why a Sabres prospects game tonight is going to have a sold out crowd.

You people don’t give enough credit to Buffalo and it’s fans…but that’s fine…they’re going to demand it from you soon enough.

    Just watch.

  14. zinger99 - Jul 15, 2014 at 6:17 PM

Yeah, a regular “Team of the Century”……

  15. djshnooks - Jul 15, 2014 at 7:45 PM

10,000 people at a PROSPECT’S SCRIMMAGE tonight in Buffalo!

Tell me we don’t love hockey?!?

10,000 to see PROSPECTS play! Lol.
