Markstrom denies trade request

Canucks goalie Jacob Markstrom says he “did not ask for a trade after the Ryan Miller signing.”

Which is interesting, because it was reported a few days ago that he did.

Instead, Markstrom tells News 1130 in Vancouver that he’s “super excited to come to camp” after “working real hard this summer,” and that he sees the Miller signing as “a challenge.”

Markstrom, 24, was sent to Vancouver in the Roberto Luongo trade between the Canucks and Panthers. As it stands, he’s No. 3 on the team’s goaltending depth chart, behind Miller and Eddie Lack.

It’s worth noting that Markstrom must clear waivers before being sent to the AHL, so the Canucks may explore a trade anyway, as there’s a risk they could lose him for nothing.

Markstrom was once a highly touted goalie prospect. But an .896 save percentage in 47 career NHL games, combined with a one-way contract that will pay him a salary of $1.4 million in 2014-15, could make teams hesitant to pick him up, be it in a trade or for free off the waiver wire.
