Montreal is currently without a captain for the first time in five years and, according to online oddsmaker Bovada, P.K. Subban is favored to be the next Canadien to wear the “C”.

Subban tops the list of potential candidates to replace Brian Gionta, who took over Montreal’s captaincy in 2010 but signed with Buffalo on the opening day of free agency. Gionta succeeded Saku Koivu, who’d been the Habs’ captain from 1999-2009 but left as a free agent following the 2008-09 season (of note, 2009-10 was the first time in club history the Canadiens played a full season without a captain.)

The full list of candidates, per Bovada:

P.K. Subban                 1/1

Tomas Plekanec            3/2

Andrei Markov               11/4

Max Pacioretty              6/1

Of the guys behind Subban, Markov has the most experience in terms of leadership as he was named Montreal’s alternate captain in 2010 (at the same time Gionta took the “C”). Plekanec isn’t far behind, though — he captained the Czech Republic’s team at the 2014 Winter Olympics in Sochi, reprising his role from the 2012 World Hockey Championships.

There have been 28 captains in Canadiens history, with Koivu and Jean Beliveau sharing the record for longest tenure (10 years).

I like pacs as captain and PK as assistant

    • 950003cups - Jul 9, 2014 at 4:58 PM

From a guy who publicly held out of training camp for money? Not sure thats gonna fly too well with the media over there in frenchy land

      • raleighcaniac - Jul 10, 2014 at 9:01 AM

950003cups. You’re thinking like an amateur who plays for fun. Pro sports is about the money. Period.

      • garn53 - Jul 10, 2014 at 11:49 AM

        You cups are correct.

  2. cjnbsc - Jul 9, 2014 at 3:38 PM

It will not be pk. They want a lot more maturity from him before going that far. It will be markov if he wants it (he doesn’t like the spotlight and speaking in interviews I think). If not probably Pleks.

  3. phtjoey - Jul 9, 2014 at 3:40 PM

PK is not ready. Alternate C is fine.
Plekanec not a quality leader. Could be an alternate.
Markov veteran who can be a leader until PK is ready
Pachioretty – how can a player who disappeared in the playoffs this year wear a C?

    • pj608 - Jul 10, 2014 at 1:41 AM

There isnt a leader on that team…. They should have 3 As. Hate to say if french squad but its the truth. Face it…. YOU DONT HAVE LEADERSHIP!!!

      • charlie24zz - Jul 10, 2014 at 3:54 AM

Some real idiots come out of the woodwork in the offseason, eh?

  4. rushledger - Jul 9, 2014 at 3:40 PM

PK shouldn’t be captain yet he needs to be groomed for that role so I’d start with an A on his jersey first.

  5. lowenni - Jul 9, 2014 at 3:45 PM

I would give it to Markov if he’s up to it. He’s a good leader and an experienced vet. I like Plekanec a lot but I don’t really see him an optimal captain. I do think it’s time to give an A to Subban, though, I think it’ll help him mature. C: Markov…A’s: Subban, Plekanec, Patcioretty maybe

  6. garlandone90 - Jul 9, 2014 at 3:45 PM

Give it to Pleky, with Patches, PK and Andrei being the alternates

  7. elrock7 - Jul 9, 2014 at 4:06 PM

They are starting to go through captains as fast as they retire numbers.

  8. canada2014gold - Jul 9, 2014 at 4:27 PM

Lol Montreal fans sure love to trash their best player. He’s the heart and soul of your team. Too bad your gm messed up the chance to get him locked up to 8 years at 7 mil. Now he’s going to want 10.5.

  9. montrealknowledge - Jul 9, 2014 at 4:40 PM

Markova for sure has no desire for it… Pleks might be on his way out in less than 2 years… And Patches is not a fan of the media in Montreal.. Can’t see any of them getting it. P.K can handle media, can perform on the ice … He will eventually be captain.. So why not now??

  10. spezzdispenser - Jul 9, 2014 at 4:50 PM

should probably sign him first before worrying about the C

  11. dolphincult - Jul 9, 2014 at 5:03 PM

Ya lets put the C on PK after we roll the bus over him at arbitration. He could be gone in 2 years himself if he doesn’t like the way the hearing goes.

  12. billiam55 - Jul 9, 2014 at 5:39 PM

captains show maturity. hes not ready. when he stop diving.

    • frozenpondwater - Jul 9, 2014 at 7:16 PM

and give it to Pleks, who was caught diving in the conference finals and was penalized for it?

      • rje49 - Jul 9, 2014 at 8:39 PM

Well, that’s the way they are taught, and they train very hard at diving.

  13. lakeshoreleafsfan - Jul 9, 2014 at 5:41 PM

Hey Montreal, don’t make Subban Captain just because you can. He’s not ready to be wearing the C yet. If you want proof of what I’m talking about, just look west down highway 401 to Toronto and see for yourself. The only difference between Dion Phaneuf and PK Subban is : Dion is mature enough to be captain but has no C ability, while PK Subban may have C ability, but he’s not mature enough to be captain. Don’t rush something that isn’t ready — it’ll most likely backfire

    • storminator16 - Jul 9, 2014 at 6:32 PM

      That, and Phaneuf actually sucks.

      • elrock7 - Jul 9, 2014 at 8:00 PM

Yeah Phaneuf may suck but he always plays against other teams top line, is always on ice in close games in last minute, Subhan is not.

Subhan had 1 or 2 more goals than Phaneuf, but a significantly worse plus/minus.

Don’t see all the fuss about this guy. He spends more time on his butt than his feet.

P.S also never saw the ice in Olympics, Babcock doesn’t like him either!

  14. pj608 - Jul 9, 2014 at 5:48 PM

given that their entire team is full of pretty much nobodies… yeah. Go ahead. Make him captain…. Who else could be captain there? Carey Price? Who cares….

    • winnipegwonder - Jul 9, 2014 at 6:56 PM

That team of nobodies made it to the conference final.

      • pj608 - Jul 10, 2014 at 12:52 AM

Yeah. For the Eastern Conference…. The way they played D they were lucky to make it that far. If PK plays like he did in the Boston series he wont get bashed so much. But when he plays like he did in the Tampa Bay series or NYR series its hard not to bash the guy. He is up and coming and needs to be more consistent. He knows it, His team knows it and his coach knows it. He will step up and get his play together.

Even if they made it to the SC Finals I dont even think they would have won 1 game against a team like LA. ( I HATE THE KINGS iam a Devils fan ) but when an entire team plays good defense, back checks and takes care of the puck its tough to beat them. Montreal turned over the puck way too much ( Minus the Boston Series) Same thing happened to the AVS against MIN. They took care of the puck… didnt matter who was in net. You cant battle for the puck and just give it away. It is a waste of energy and brings your moral down as a player. You have to take care of the puck…. you take care of it and it will take care of you. That is the basics of any sport whether its Football, Basketball, Football or hockey. Baseball is tough to put into that perspective but i think you get the gist….

  15. justinhbhb - Jul 9, 2014 at 6:13 PM

Plekanec or Markov should get it.

    • pj608 - Jul 9, 2014 at 6:23 PM

I guess so but are they really Captains? They seem more just like players to me….

      • pj608 - Jul 9, 2014 at 6:24 PM

The one gut they got rid of (Gorges) was the only one i thought that could of been captain after this past year.

  16. bruins33 - Jul 9, 2014 at 8:58 PM

would love to see subban as the montreal captain

  17. flyerspsu - Jul 9, 2014 at 9:38 PM

    plekanac

    • pj608 - Jul 10, 2014 at 12:44 AM

I would give it to Plekanac for a year or two before handing it to PK. PK needs to settle himself down a bit first. We all know what he is capable of but give it to him to fast and he will be whining even more that he does if you dont pass him the puck.

Once he gets his play straightened out then yes. Give it to him. Make him earn it. Don’t just hand it to him

      • charlie24zz - Jul 10, 2014 at 3:57 AM

        Man…

  18. isaacdb23 - Jul 10, 2014 at 4:33 AM

    2014 Montreal Canadiens
    Preseason Predictions

    Forwards:
    Pacioretty(a)-Desharnais-Parenteau
    Galchenyuk-Eller-Gallagher
    Bournival(*)-Plekanec(c,a)-Bourque
    Prust-Malhotra-Weise

    Defensemen:
    Markov(a,c)-Subban(c?,a)
    Emelin-Gilbert
    Beaulieu-Weaver

    Goalies:
    Price
    Tokarski

    Depth:
    Tinordi
    Sekac(*)
    Moen
    Scherbak(*)
    (*) competing

-Parenteau/Gallagher could be swapped, as could Beaulieu/Emelin. The left wing spot on the third line is up for grabs. If Galchenyuk shines at center during preseason another center could be traded or moved to left wing (likely trade). Plekanec is too far along to move, Malhotra was signed to center the fourth line, unless Eller’s arbitration goes terribly wrong (which nobody wants) Chucky stays at wing another year (unless someone gets hurt). Markov will be offered the C, likely declines meaning the team must decide if Subban is ready for the C now or if they should give it to Plekanec to hold on to for a couple years while PK is groomed for it. Pacioretty and Subban are both going to be around awhile so Patch is unlikely to wear the C now due to the team’s desire for Subban to eventually wear it. If Pacioretty is made captain now then he would be in the way when PK’s time comes. Subban will either be signed to a long term deal (7-8 years, 8-10 million annually) or another temporary two-year. Bergevin will want to lock him up. There is not room for three goalies but Tokarski proved himself NHL ready. That means either him or Budaj will be traded. Budaj is beloved in the locker room and a proven backup and Tokarski has a high return value so trading him may make more sense but parting with his potential (even though he will likely never see it realized in Montreal as he is only a few years younger than Price) could be too difficult at this point. As hard as it will be for the team, Bergevin is all business (proven by Gorges and Gionta). Budaj is moved elsewhere. Scherbak is likely not NHL ready this year.

  19. jhnyr45 - Jul 10, 2014 at 10:24 AM

for a player that had a hissy fit cause he got pulled off the powerplay before the full 2 minutes were up…… i would say he does not deserve the C….

  20. garn53 - Jul 10, 2014 at 12:03 PM

PK has not earned the right to be given Captain status. Add to that he is not signed yet and he will either go to arbitration and cause great strife with management, or his rights will be traded for a bunch of quality players – which Montreal really needs. Add to that the kid is a me me me man with a huge cranium. Other than being a good player he has very little team leadership qualities. They need to look for a person like Toews, Staal, Brown…. only problem is either Montreal doesn’t have any one like that or the nearest options don’t want the job.

    Lol make Carey Price Captain
