Devils ink Schneider to reported seven-year, $42 million deal

After days of speculation, the Devils made it official on Wednesday, announcing they’ve signed goalie Cory Schneider to a multi-year deal.

“We’re pleased to announce that we have solidified our goaltending for not only this year but for the future,” GM Lou Lamoriello said, per the Star-Ledger. “We’ve gone from one great goalie to another.”

In true Devils fashion, the club didn’t release any details regarding the deal, but both TVA and NorthJersey.com report it’s a seven-year contract worth $42 million, good for an average annual cap hit of $6M. That cap hit would put Schneider as the eighth-highest among NHL goalies, on par with Corey Crawford and Ryan Miller, though it’s important to note 2014-15 is the last season of Schneider’s old deal (three years, $12 million, a $4M cap hit) — his extension won’t kick in until 2015-16.

Schneider, 28, will now move forward as a clear-cut No. 1 goalie for the first time in his career. After spending his first five professional seasons in Vancouver’s timeshare with Roberto Luongo, Schneider — acquired by the Devils at the 2013 NHL Entry draft — found himself in another goalie tandem last season with Devils legend Martin Brodeur.

The result? At 28, Schneider has never appeared in more than 45 games (which came in his first year with the Devils) and has made just 143 career appearances. To put that in perspective, the other prominent goalie from Schneider’s ’04 draft class, Pekka Rinne, has played in 317 career games despite missing almost all of last season with hip problems.

Lack of playing time appears to be a thing of the past for Schneider, however. With Brodeur still testing free agency and unlikely to return to New Jersey, the Devils are putting all their eggs in the Schneider basket with just Keith Kinkaid and Scott Clemmensen as the depth options behind him.

In terms of total salary, Schneider’s reported $42 million would put him among the league’s elite:

That is a lot of money and term for a goalie who has yet to prove his worth as a full time number 1.

    • pfhockey - Jul 9, 2014 at 4:31 PM

I think he’s more than good enough to be a full time starter. I think his playoff performances are clouding your thoughts with doubts on him though.

        I was PRETTY DAMN CLOSE!!

He’s gonna get north of $6 million for 6 years.

Still think we should’ve taken Bo WhoDat instead of the trade for Schneider

    • phtjoey - Jul 9, 2014 at 4:34 PM

That’s exactly what I was thinking before reading your comment.

      • 950003cups - Jul 9, 2014 at 4:52 PM

So, now what? Bo Horvat gets 8 years at $48,000,000?

    • goodolejr - Jul 9, 2014 at 4:34 PM

Career .925 in the regular season and .922 in the post season, I’d say he’s proven himself to be more than capable.

      • narfmoo12 - Jul 9, 2014 at 4:44 PM

129 career starts at age 28? His career high is 43 starts, coming last year. I wouldn’t say that is proven. That’s less than two seasons of games for the guy he is replacing.

      • goodolejr - Jul 9, 2014 at 5:39 PM

Considering #1 goalies start anywhere from around 45 games to almost 70, his 129 career starts would put him a little over 2 seasons worth of starts. Yes, that may be too early to hand out a contract like this if he was only playing for 2 years, but the fact that he’s been putting up no less than .921 the past 4 seasons makes a case that he is absolutely an elite tender in the league. If he REALLY falls off after this, I’m sure everyone would be in shock.

      • 950003cups - Jul 9, 2014 at 4:47 PM

I don’t even know his stats are that good. I only know guys who’ve played with him in College and they all think could be almost as good as Quick if given enough time.

      • 950003cups - Jul 9, 2014 at 4:51 PM

        narfmoo12

I don’t think the Devils had much of a choice. There aren’t any available goalies with his talents that are available. He was the last, and he’s a Devil for life!! Just like Kovalchuk!

      • pj608 - Jul 9, 2014 at 6:11 PM

        THANK YOU!!!!!

    • zoojersey - Jul 9, 2014 at 5:11 PM

I tend to agree. Unfortunately great stats don’t equal wins. The majority of the team does not play well in front of him. Maybe that will change this season with Brodeur out and their new signings/subtractions. Will be exciting to see.

      • pj608 - Jul 9, 2014 at 6:16 PM

Yeah. The team definitely needs to score more goals for this guy… He had under 2.00 GAA so if they can score 4-5 goals its pretty much a win. Another thing. The Defense needs to learn how to play around him. They try to block shots instead of picking up rebounds which is his weakness. Brodeur was forever the best goalie hands down at not giving other teams a second chance whether if it were his rebound control or his acrobatic INSANE tricks to take away that second opportunity. Cory will make the saves but the D men need to gather up the rebounds and get the puck out of the zone.

  2. jpelle82 - Jul 9, 2014 at 4:28 PM

so he has a 6 million cap hit and quick has a 5.8? I read that right right?

    • goodolejr - Jul 9, 2014 at 4:31 PM

Yep. Quick signed under the old CBA which allowed them to spread his cap hit out over 10 years instead of 8.

      • brymck1 - Jul 9, 2014 at 4:41 PM

Quick’s contract is also 7m per until the last 3 years when it takes a nosedive.

      • jpelle82 - Jul 9, 2014 at 4:55 PM

still even at 7 that’s a bargain for the first 7. the fact schneider is getting 6 is laughable

  3. tross16 - Jul 9, 2014 at 4:28 PM

    He’s obviously a number 1 goalie…

  7. credible316 - Jul 9, 2014 at 5:10 PM

What’s with Jersey and terrible contracts?

    • 950003cups - Jul 9, 2014 at 5:19 PM

Terrible? You have Lundqvist at top dollars until he’s 40 years old. There was one Ilya Bryzgalov who’ll still be getting paid after the Apocalypse. Then you have Roberto Luongo. Where did NJ have bad contracts? NJ has NO CONTRACTS that’s what’s bad. They lose everyone! Kovalchuk? Volchenkov? Both gone.Parise? nope, his bad contract is in Minnesota.

      • pj608 - Jul 9, 2014 at 6:06 PM

Even Kovalchuk’s contract wasn’t bad if he stayed…. NJ was in debt way before Ilya was even in the NHL. So people that think it was a bad contract are highly mislead. NJ doesn’t give bad contracts because when a player wants to much they let them walk… ( Clarkson,Gomez, Parise) Yeah parise is still good but for how much hes making his stats are nowhere near the same as they were in NJ. He was a NJ Devil! He fit the system and now he is trying to switch them over to that which is 2 way style of play, crash the net and look for tips and or chips. Thats another reason why they got moulson and now they got vanek. All tip and chip guys.

Go back and watch some of the NJD vs Washington Caps games when Kovalchuk was still in the league. He out played Ovechkin in EVERY GAME! He back checked and did his thing taking the puck to the net or making a great pass to set up a team mate. He was worth the money and he was making what? 1 million less than Ovi and Malkin. He was the best Russian player in the league next to Datsyuk. He wasn’t as lazy as most think. In Atlanta thats what the coach wanted him to do. They wanted him up at the blue line (cherry picking) but even there he would back check. He did it in NJ. I just think he got soft over the years and didnt want to get hit anymore. Which to me was odd because when he first came into the league he HIT harder than just about any forward in the league.

      • billiam55 - Jul 10, 2014 at 8:24 AM

knew u were a stupid devils fan. loser.

  8. pj608 - Jul 9, 2014 at 5:41 PM

6 Mill per isn’t all that bad. He has had top save % or top (low) GAA in the league for a few years now. I know he hasn’t played a full season yet but he has proven he can get it done. I just don’t agree with the term but they were pressed against a wall. 1. If he got more games to play last season we would of obviously seen more out of what he can do 2. If we made it to the playoffs we would of seen how he does there.

It is what it is… Good or Bad but if Lou didn’t get this done Schnieder probably would of waited until free agency offers came around from other teams to see what he was worth and like 950003cups sais. There are goalies out there like hank getting 8 mil and with the cap salaries going up we could of lost him to a team that was dumb enough to sign him for that much.

Although as a Devils fan I will say Lundqvist is the best goalie in the league right now and the rangers make him earn every bit of that money. In fact Hank probably wishes he went to a better team for a little less money know because he must be taking so many stress relievers and pain killers come play off time.

Hopefully when 6 years rolls around we will have Marty’s son Anthony Brodeur as his true successor… only time can tell.

    • jhnyr45 - Jul 10, 2014 at 10:38 AM

Anthony Brodeur will be nothing like his father…. I heard he isnt good at all

      • pj608 - Jul 11, 2014 at 3:44 AM

I heard the same… but theres always hope. Never know man. To be honest you probably won’t ever see another goalie like Marty. Not just off his stats but he was ready to play so quickly…. and he was able to stay composed. I know he was on one of the best defensive squads around but go back and watch those 95 playoffs series. He was amazing… Even the announcers were baffled by how good he was at his age…. and it is crazy to think that back then when Marty won his first cup…. HE WAS ONLY GETTING PAID $140,000….. ( THATS RIGHT 140k/140 thousand)

  9. pj608 - Jul 9, 2014 at 6:21 PM

And to all you ignorant fools out there, NJ was top 5 teams with lowest goals scored against. It is not the Defense of the Goaltending, it is the offense not scoring enough of goals! All the TOP 10 teams with fewest GAA made the playoffs except NJ. They need GOALS!!! Behind the blue line is set the way it has been for decades. They need quicker skaters and better shooters. Thats it. They will be a playoff contender once again and I can see them winning at least 1 cup with Cory Schnieder. That is 1 more than Henrik Lundqvist will ever win with the NYRs and 1 more and Pekka Rinne will ever win in Nashville.

    CASE CLOSED

  10. ragsrus - Jul 9, 2014 at 6:39 PM

Devils are a crap team. Don’t talk about the Rangers, they are heads and shoulders better than the debs. Devils won’t be making the playoffs for another 10 years. They are the new isles. Worst team in the metro , easy. You Debbie homers are retarded.

      • 950003cups - Jul 10, 2014 at 8:41 AM

Rangers and their dumb fans can’t grasp that we may have a better goalie in the next two years. Henrik is done. He’s old and out of gas. He has nothing left and will enjoy his days counting his money. Speaking of money, the devils now have deeper pockets than the rangers, a younger, faster, and bigger d-core (Girardi till 2020 LOLOL) our forwards are next. But after all your guys “Bolted” on you, you’re gonna be kissing red n black jerseys for years to come.

(Que the “we have more fans than you” LOLOL)

    • adamal17 - Jul 10, 2014 at 12:57 AM

You’re and idiot. With new ownership the Devils will be good for years to come with some solid goaltending.

    • hennnrikkk - Jul 10, 2014 at 2:56 PM

lol – funniest comment Ive read this month..

Lets talk about the Lose York Smurfs a little, shall we?

The 2013-14 cup run will be ruinous the the Smurfs of tomorrow. Their depth players are jumping ship to play for more $$ with GMs that know how to run a team.

Boyle, Stralman, Pouliot and Dorsett all said “Buy Bye”
Richards is laughing all the way to the bank. He doesnt need to work a day in his life from now on, and now that a REAL contender signed him, his new world class linemates will cover up his egregious mistakes.

The Smurfs “home grown” captain Callahan left for Tampa with 2 first round draft picks in exhange for a diminutive 40 year old StLouis. Every team in the NHL wants a guy like Cally, and the Smurfs traded him for a horse on the way to the glue factory. Im sure thatll sting for quite some time. LOL

Brassard, Krieder and Zucc all filed for salary arbitration, so dont expect Sather to keep all 3 and even one of them will be sorely missed when another team scoops them up.

So to the Rags – Prepare to suffer under the burden of the NHLs highest paid goalie at 8.5 million for the next 7 years. At 32 years old, Queen Henrietta peaked last month and he now has fewer good year ahead of him than behind.

Rick Trash eats up almost as much cap space as the queen for another 4 years, and you guys aint tradin that albatross either. Not to mention youre out of buyouts! uh oh!

Anisimov and Dubinsky are flourishing in Columbus – looks like that trade went better for them eh?

Oh, and how about Gaborik? He must me loving his Stanley Cup ring. HAHA – Sather, Im sure, is pounding his head on the pavement over that one.

so to this troll and his Lose York Smurfs, I can hear the echos of 1994 calling… “This one will last a lifetime!”

Ragsrus – got anything else to say? please come back though when your team is relevant and isnt the most unsuccessful original 6 franchise in NHL history..

  12. Whooten Anit - Jul 9, 2014 at 7:43 PM

if i caught you wrong i read this as a sarcastic ranger troll

  13. cerealrapist - Jul 9, 2014 at 8:00 PM

Anyone who thinks this isn’t amazing news for Devils fans hasn’t been paying attention the past few years.

Goalie is the most important position in the sport, and the Devils have locked up one of the best, most consistent, ones in the league. $6 mil/year is a bargain for a guy who has consistently had a save pct above %920.

Monumental move by Lou. The Devils future in the crease is secure.

  14. stakex - Jul 9, 2014 at 11:00 PM

About what you would expect him to make, and this will at the very least provide the Devils with a solid starter for the foreseeable future.

The questions about Schneider’s ability to be a top tier number aren’t completely ridiculous though. His numbers are good for what he’s played, but he’s never played a full season as starter. How will he handle the load of 20-30 more games a year? Have his career numbers been inflated by light workloads, and a limited amount of games per year? Is he really good enough to carry a team that is likely to have goal scoring issues for the foreseeable future? Questions that will all be answered over the next seven years.

    • pj608 - Jul 9, 2014 at 11:29 PM

I think his numbers will be very identical if not better. More time playing will mean better chemistry with the team and defenders all together. He is in top shape unlike some goalies. I think he will be just fine. A lot of people have their doubts but there always been doubts about the Devils…. 3 cups? Thats right. Keep doubting.

Even though in that era they probably could have won another 1 or 2 but for having a young team at the time i think they did well.

    • 950003cups - Jul 10, 2014 at 9:22 AM

      Stakex

When a starting goalie can’t play consistently his numbers will likely struggle as they try to get situated. The guy can come out of the gate this season like garbage. Or he can post consecutive shutouts. As long as he gets in a groove, I think he’ll be competitive.

Confucius say “Good things come to those who wait” …

    WELL DONE # 5 !!!

Finally this ‘decent’ man receives a fair hand and ‘praise be’ for that. After so many ‘torturous’ years having to bite his tongue behind the ’64 million dollar’ phoney, then having to put up with the ‘retirement home’ antics of some irrelevant fossil, Schneider ‘finally’ gets his due … and not a minute too soon I might add. Anyway, I’m now very ‘happy’ as a result of reading this story and I wish 95,000 Cups and the Devils ‘all the best’ in going forward. This signing marks the beginning of a ‘glorious’ new chapter in their enterprise and no doubt the Eastern Conference is now ‘quivering’ in their skates !

How are you going to put scrivens up there above schnieder? Why isnt Lundqvist, Rinne, Mike Smith,
Carey Price or even Tuuka Rask on there? I think Rask is over rated any way but SCRIVENS?!?!?! c’mon man. Not over guys like that. Only one besides quick that deserves to be on that SHORT list is Bernier. He had a hell of a year for TOR too bad their team sucks. Oh, and speaking of crappy teams and good goalies. How about Steve Mason this year for philly or even Bobrovski or Varlamov. Last two are on good-decent teams but Mason carried his team. Hes the Next Lunqvist on the east in favor of heavy shoulders and severe back pains.

      • 950003cups - Jul 10, 2014 at 9:24 AM

Dude. It’s Blom. He’s not insulting Schneider at all. He puts all his favorite goalies in above Ovechkin on his goalie list

  16. ray2013 - Jul 10, 2014 at 1:08 AM

I think the questions of how many starts he had is a bit over-blown. He was part of a league-leading tandem in Vancouver for a number of years, so there was no way he was going to start 60-70 games. And then he came to NJD with Brodeur still in net, and he wasn’t going to get 60-70 starts there either.

But I do recognize that he’s never played a 60-70 game season, so we don’t know how he’ll fare under those conditions. There are more than a few teams that would be willing to make that gamble though. Good signing.

Here’s some more recent garbage contracts. All are ranger contracts.

The Hudson flows south hahaha. You’re just too funny. Ever think of taking your talents to broadway? Perhaps apply for a GM position of the rangers? Your comedy skills are just dangerously talented.

Face it numbnuts. Your favorite team had to cheat to make the finals. It’s over. Not happening anymore. From the day the kings beat you until the next 5 or six years you’re team will be bottom dwellers in the nhl.

HAHA – Sather, Im sure, is pounding his head on the pavement over that one.

so to the Lose York Smurfs, I can hear the echos of 1994 calling… “This one will last a lifetime!”

please come back though when your team is relevant and isnt the most unsuccessful original 6 franchise in NHL history..

HAHAHAHA – TOO EASY – OWNED

not a stupid fan, and have more hockey knowledge in my pinky finger than you do… Just stating a fact that most nj hockey fans who have knowledge root for the Rangers and the Flyers, all the other idiots such as yourself root for the devils

Yes you are a stupid fan. Sorry to be the barer of bad news. But… Not to worry. Not. To. Worry. You have more fans. LOLOL.

Also, I’m gonna help you not be as stupid as you were this morning. Have you ever thought why is it that so many ranger fans go to the Rock for devils ranger games? I’ll teach you something. Ranger fans have been priced out of their own arena. It’s all corporate guys in suits. Therefore ranger fans save up their pennies all year to see their team 2x a year live. Yes, the fans you see only attend 2 games a year. No, we can’t compete with that. As for flyer fans, they come in much less numbers than ranger fans. Not even close.
