PHT’s Morning Skate takes a look at the world of hockey to see what’s happening, and what we’ll be talking about around the NHL and beyond.

Barry Trotz loves the Brooks Orpik signing, but acknowledges new Caps GM Brian MacLellan has “taken some heat” for the five-year, $27.5 million deal. (CSN Washington)

The Panthers have invited a pair of Florida-bred players to their prospects camp (Florida Sun-Sentinel)

Czech winger Jiri Sekac signed a two-way UFA deal with Montreal this year over a number of other suitors. Now, he’s looking to crack the Habs’ roster this fall. (NHL.com)

The Caps have had the best off season of any team in the history of the NHL. We got the free agents we needed to build a championship team, and got them at a good price. We hired the best available head coach. It will be a year or two, but we will finally get to raise the cup. People bashing our team for getting Orpik are just jealous and have no hockey knowledge. Great time to be a Caps fan. C-A-P-S, CAPS, CAPS, CAPS. Cheers!

Stop being a toolbag. You aren’t the leader of us Capitals fans. Probably aren’t even the leader of your own household.

Orpik is too slow in year 1 of a 5-year deal.

This is a broken record. Do we all know it’s not the best of deals that was signed on July 1? Yes. But does this signing make this team better than what it was on the blue line last year? Yes.

Who would you rather have, readers… John Erskine or Brooks Orpik?… I think I know that answer

    • jpelle82 - Jul 8, 2014 at 10:20 AM

at least john erskine will fight and defend your captain….

The Caps played 14 different defensemen last year. 14. And not because if injuries. Yea, they overpaid, but they had to make the team better, which is what they did.

The media keeps beating a dead horse over this. Time will truly tell.

  4. c9castine - Jul 8, 2014 at 1:22 PM

Get over it, so he got over paid for too long. Hardly the first one, hardly the only one.. guys all over the league every year that get over paid.

The Penguins have nothing to do with this article.
