Hertl tweaks knee at Sharks’ prospect camp

San Jose forward Tomas Hertl suffered what the club’s calling a “minor” knee injury on Tuesday at prospect development camp, and may be held out of Wednesday night’s game, per the Mercury News.

Downplayed by Sharks GM Doug Wilson — “minor tweak, just soreness from not skating,” is how he described it — any issues involving Hertl’s knee are newsworthy, given his rookie campaign was cut in half after going knee-on-knee with Kings captain Dustin Brown in late December.

The collision forced Hertl, 20, to undergo surgery and miss 45 games as a result. The incident derailed what looked to be a Calder-worthy campaign — prior to getting hurt, the Czech sniper had 15 goals and 10 assists in his first 35 games; upon returning, he had two goals and five points in seven games during San Jose’s opening round playoff collapse to the Kings.

Wengels vs Browknee. The “captain” needs to stop running and man-up. This is not negotiable.

    • pirovash88 - Jul 9, 2014 at 1:05 AM

That Captain has manned up in ways no player on the Sharks roster has been able to do so. Bringing two Cups to LA in three years pretty much covers that.

      • moarjam - Jul 9, 2014 at 10:50 AM

Not a sharks or kings fan. I like brown but its pretty weak he wont answer the bell for that cheap shot. Its not even like he’s terribly outmatched against Wingels.

    • nyking1963 - Jul 9, 2014 at 12:02 PM

Who the heck is Wingles and why should Brown go off the ice for 5 minutes with this stiff?
If you recall a couple of years ago, Shane Doan the captain of the Yotes challenged Brown and they both went at it.
How about your worthless captain Thornton man up and challenge Brown?
If a guy like Wingles wants to make a statement, let him challenge Nolan or Clifford.

      • skr213 - Jul 9, 2014 at 1:24 PM

It’s a good point. Zen Joe is the one who should have stepped up. One more reason I want him gone. If he wears the C next season, I will not be going to any games.

      butthurt sharks fan strikes again

      • strictlythedanks - Jul 8, 2014 at 11:01 PM

I’m far from a sharks fan. Slight sarcasm was intended, but in all seriousness we all know browns a chump.

      • endusersolutions2013 - Jul 9, 2014 at 12:54 AM

year before, near the end of season, Browne did clearly intentional headshots two nights in a row – Stars and then ended Pominville’s season. In he playoffs, he tried to do kne on knee and either shoulder or elbow to head of the Blues Jaden Schwartz, fortunately missing with both.

As his skills and shooting % decline, I guess he’s refining his take out artist skills.

And I’m not a sharks fan.

    • avscup - Jul 9, 2014 at 10:13 AM

People who live in glass houses shouldn’t throw stones. I guess we all expect that from you though.

You were the first to defend Cooke for his knee on Barrie. Hypocrisy?

You are a world class moron and king of the douche bags.

  3. esracerx46 - Jul 8, 2014 at 10:42 PM

What the hell is Hertl doing at prospect camp?

    • btlpper68 - Jul 8, 2014 at 11:21 PM

The dude is 20 and played half a season

      • esracerx46 - Jul 9, 2014 at 12:08 AM

If you’re going to put prospects on the ice to evaluate skill Hertl doesn’t need to be out there. You know where his game is at. If you want to pull him in and see where he’s at rehab wise that’s fine. With what he did last year, he may be a distraction to some of these guys trying to show what they can do. Why risk a “tweak” you know he’s starting opening night.

    • jernster21 - Jul 8, 2014 at 11:58 PM

The Avs’ prospect camp doesn’t involve any ice time at all and I’m wondering how similar that is across the league. There’s more dry land training in addition to cooking and financial classes – it’s more about meeting and hanging out with the other prospects in the system, learning how to train, nutrition, managing finances and overall learning what it’s like and how to become a sports professional.

      • esracerx46 - Jul 9, 2014 at 12:11 AM

That’s pretty cool. But I think you can do that after practices, provided their is no crazy language in the CBA. Make it a week where they have a routine of eating, hockey, eating, training, bills, sleep. Or however they want

    • avscup - Jul 9, 2014 at 7:27 PM

They need numbers to have a game ya know. Takes about 20 plus a couple goalies eh?

  4. avfanforlife - Jul 9, 2014 at 12:11 AM

I hope the kid is told to take it easy until he is 100%. I’m not a Sharks fan, but I do try to watch as many games around the league as I can, and this kid was really something to watch. Looking forward to the few Sharks/Av’s games this year to see the two “rookies” go at it !

  5. sjsharks66 - Jul 9, 2014 at 2:53 AM

Yeah, that’s manning up alright. He has 2 cups. Too bad when his career is over, no one will care about those cups. He has a few more cheap shots and possibly a career ending hit left in him. He knows what he did to Hertl. Why not man up and drop the gloves with someone. Hell, it’s wingels. Not like it’s Clowe or Shelley. I understand he is probably embarrassed by being beaten by Kesler, but own up to it.

Been wondering if the reason Wilson signed Scott is due to the first game of the season. Send him out to attack Brown like he did to Kessel.

    • pirovash88 - Jul 9, 2014 at 3:04 AM

No, actually, when he retires people will care. As an American born Captain and able to hoist two Cups, he will be in remembered.

    • nyking1963 - Jul 9, 2014 at 12:06 PM

      sjshark66,
that’s 2 more cups than your worthless franchise will ever get to celebrate.
Why in the playoffs didn’t Hertl or your captain challenge Brown?
the Kings are all about winning cups. Sj is all about whining and choking in the playoffs. Gotta love jealousy!

      • skr213 - Jul 9, 2014 at 1:29 PM

I’m sorry, how long did it take the Kings to hoist a Cup? Oh that’s right, FORTY FIVE YEARS. When the Sharks get to 45 years without a Cup, then you can talk smack like that. Until then, maybe work on your humility a little.

    • gradyspop - Jul 9, 2014 at 12:56 PM

Let’s start here. Go back and watch the replay again. Hertl was the one with the extended knee, not Brown. The knee that Hertle made contact with was clearly Brown’s trailing knee. There was nothing to fight about. And speaking of fight, the Sharts clearly have none of that after that classic collapse! Enjoy your butthurt. Because we Kings fans are enjoying another Cup!

  6. sharksfan97 - Jul 9, 2014 at 10:03 AM

Kid played at the Worlds and lit it up. He just plain scores, period. Reminds me of a young Eric Staal. Sharks need to rest him and that knee, get him proper nutrition and resistance training. I don’t even care if he starts the year. Make sure he’s 110%. He’s one of our next superstars, along with Goldobin.

  7. nyking1963 - Jul 9, 2014 at 3:09 PM

    skr213,
Who cares how long it took the Kings to win one..they’re now a 2 time cup champion
You keep waiting 45 years..I guess that’ll make you happy waiting another 20 years..In the meantime, please step aside as we continue to work to becoming th next dynasty in the NHL. 2 out of 3 years isn’t a bad start.
As for humility…I don’t rag on fans who show respect. Your jealousy is what set me off.
Don’t be going off on Brown. You know damn well you’d love to have him as your captain. The guy hs proven to be a winner. Other than Toews, what other current captain in the NHL has had as much success as Brown? The guy is a team player. He could ahve gotten a lot mroe on the open market but wanted to remain a King while giving them cap flexibility to keep the team together as much as possible.
Thornton can’t hold Brown’s jockstrap when it comes to being a leader. Why don’t you go after your own instead of showing petty jealousy by going after Brown.

    • skr213 - Jul 10, 2014 at 1:32 PM

My jealousy set you off? Please show me where I was jealous? I’m simply stating that talking smack about the Sharks not winning a Cup in their 21 year existence is silly for a fan of a franchise that took 45 years to get their first Cup. If you don’t see that, then I have no help for you.

    • skr213 - Jul 10, 2014 at 1:34 PM

P.S. When did I go off on Brown?? I’m the one that AGREED with you above that it should have been Thornton (who I agree is a crap leader and I want him gone) that challenged Brown after the Hertl knee. You need to keep straight who you’re even arguing with.

  8. sjsharks66 - Jul 9, 2014 at 4:39 PM

I cant roll my eyes hard enough for these comments. First they say Brown doesn’t have to fight. Then bag on Joe for not fighting Brown. If he is too scared to fight Wingels then what makes you think he would agree to fight Joe? What do you want him to do? Grab Brown and start punching? Then you can all complain how Brown is class and Jumbo is cheap?

Anyone of you Kings fans watch the olympics? He threw a knee there too. He will end someones career someday. It wont matter if he wins 5 cups, he will always be nothing but a cheap player. It’s easy to win playoff series when you take out a teams best D man. Both cup runs it happened. The Kings did it against the Blues and did it against the Sharks. In fact, it seems like the Kings throw a cheap hit every year in the playoffs.

Stoll driving Whites head into the boards.
Stoll driving Vlasics head into the boards.
Kings driving Pietrangelo into the boards.
Brown throwing the knee against the Coyotes.

So claim the Sharks are just “butthurt” all you want. Many other fans, not just Sharks think very little of the Kings. For the exact reasons stated above.

    • avscup - Jul 9, 2014 at 7:33 PM

Many fans of neither team think you are a clueless soccer fan hiding in a Sharts jersey! Quit the crying dude, the men will sort it out. Always have, always will!

    • nyking1963 - Jul 9, 2014 at 8:17 PM

Stop whining. You seem to have some type of fixation on Brown and the Kings. I guess that’s what jealousy will do to you
Say whatever you want but it won’t change the fact that you had a 3-0 lead in the series and were humiliated. Go ahead and choke on it for the rest of the summer and beyond.
Btw. Impressive list. I’m sure the Sharks are all angels..you know guys like Torres. Why did you fail to mention some of his transgressions?
      Beyond pathetic!

      • pirovash88 - Jul 10, 2014 at 2:40 AM

Not only does he bring up brown and the kings time and time again, but you’ve gotta love how he never recognizes that Torres is one the worst offenders in the league. You no longer just have Torres, but your genious gm decided to bring in Scott as well. If that isn’t an indication that the sharks are on their way down, I don’t know what is. Time to restructure and continue to lose, have fun sjsharks66.

  9. sjsharks66 - Jul 10, 2014 at 1:20 AM

Yeah, sorry I left out the only “dirty” hit the Sharks threw in the past 4 years in the playoffs. Yeah, Torres was suspended. No one on the Kings was. Does not justify what makes a dirty hit and what does not.

Maybe if you guys owned up to it and said “yeah, those were cheap hits” then people wouldn’t mind the Kings. But instead you just yell “WE HAVE TWO CUPS!” That doesn’t change that those hits were cheap. Talking about Brown manning up, maybe some of you clueless kings fans should instead.
