Crowded front office: Canucks hire ex-Flames assistant GM

Jul 7, 2014, 4:09 PM EDT

Having already implemented a new president of hockey ops in Trevor Linden and GM in Jim Benning, the Canucks added more to their front office on Monday as Benning announced he hired former Flames assistant GM John Weisbrod as Vice President of Player Personnel.

Weisbrod, who was turfed by Calgary along with GM Jay Feaster in December of last year, will reunite with Benning after the two spent several years together in Boston’s scouting department. Previously, Weisbrod worked in the Dallas scouting department and, perhaps most famously, was the former GM of the NBA’s Orlando Magic — a position he was promoted to after his tenure with the IHL’s Orlando Solar Bears came to an end (when the International league folded.)

As mentioned in the headline, Vancouver has a very crowded hockey ops department now that Weisbrod’s aboard — he joins Linden, Benning, Stan Smyl (director of player development), Lorne Henning (assistant GM) and Laurence Gilman (assistant GM).

The NHL recycles more than Waste Management.

Burkie would have never wanted some on smarter than himself in Calgary so he fired Weisbrod. Canucks hire him and put him right into a position he is good at. Good signing..

Why is Stan Smyl still there? Hopefully he’s on thin ice with Benning. Those draft picks have reeeeeeeeeeeally developed. (sarcasm) I’d have thought he was on his way out with Jordan Schroeder.

      Smyl is NOT in scouting!!!

Look at Delorme, Snepts, et al.

I like the way the new management team are moving.
A huge flaw in the NHL is that there is no CAP on spending for Management.

Detroit to their credit-Illich is smart- were the first to take note and have developed a great – and large – Management team.

Stevie Y is following suit and now the Nucks.

‘It’s like shuffling deck chairs on the Titanic’ …

So said a Vancouver resident in my store earlier today in response to the news of this latest hiring. I was ‘tempted’ to weigh in on the matter and I just about did, just before this shopper’s companion retorted back … “well I’ve had enough of this crap ! … I’m signing on with the LA Kings !”. The bottom line is that right now hundreds, if not ‘thousands’ of Vancouver Canucks fans are ‘packing it in’ here in Vancouver in terms of their support for the local team. And ‘many’ of them are NOW opting to fall in with the ‘best’ of the best, the glorious Stanley Cup Champion LA Kings !

Lol those are called Bandwagon fans. The real fans stick with their team through the highs and lows. I’m a BC boy and a Canuck fan for life, win or lose.

Nothing anecdotal in that analysis whatsoever.

Well good for you for knowing that word.
